Sorry, I'm pretty new to PvP and want to clarify whether this is acceptable PvP conduct. I was in the middle of doing an escort quest when I was quickly killed by another player 6 levels higher than me. I guess it's really two questions.
1. Is it ok to attack someone during escort quests?
2. Is it ok to attack anyone several levels below you?
#2 doesn't bother me a whole lot because I can just run away.
#1 bothers me quite a bit because now I have to start the quest over and it makes me wonder what kind of person would camp an area he has no business being in other than to kill off lower level toons.
Someone did this to me yesterday on my lower level Sorc 5 seconds before the quest was gonna finish. I switched to my warrior and murdered every red name I could find in every channel in that zone. I then switched back to the Sorc and dropped the escort quest completely.
Ok, I logged in as a different character (level 14), step out of the town i'm in and kill the first cat for a quest and along comes a level 31 jerk and kills me before I can even think about running. This same guy looks like he's been running around a loop killing everyone he sees.
EM Really needs to either apply a large penalty for killing lower levels or simply prevent initiating combat with someone less than two level than yourself.
I was really looking forward to getting into PvP but jerks like this really ruin the game. I really don't know how (or why) you guys put up with this stuff. I guess being that this game is rated mature is really meaningless.
Its not a question of whether or not its ok to do that, its a pvp server anything goes. Now it was a [filtered] move by them of course but its still a pvp server, and [filtered] like that will happen thats the evil of pvp, theres enough channels for you to switch to avoid people like that, ive been ganked plenty of times but i alway go back and fight them, usually doing that they will leave you alone for the most part, shows them you got some balls and not an easy kill. hell im 55 and still get ganked and im a priest, but i always go back for the revenge kill regardless. apparently you all think that joining a pvp servers means you will never get ganked randomly, honostly grow some common sense people
they do have a penalty btw called infamy, they get huge amounts for pickin on lowbies, so when they go back to there level of questing there easy targets for groups, thats the circle of pvp, so dont think there getting away scott free

grow some balls and stop [filtered]ing, you act like pvp servers all follow some unwritten code, stop being ignorant, and definatly dont post pitty stories cause thats fair game for everyone on this server to flame you, just an fyi
As I said, I am fairly new to PvP and wanted to know if this is the norm. Based on some of the replies, it sounds like there are a lot of jerks in the forums and in the game - guess that's to be expected.
And to the informative replies, thanks. Good to hear about the Infamy, I'll have to look that up a bit more (I'm still trying to find a good resource on PvP). And if kill whoever wherever for whatever is the rules then that's good to know and I'll learn to adapt my play style.
Compiling my "hit list" and someday, somehow I'll get my revenge (and it won't be on characters lower in level and pose absolutely no threat. I don't get off on ruining others enjoyment of the game and I find no satisfaction killing those that can't defend themselves -- but I guess that's just me)

Heya, to answer your questions (even though some people already replied, I think I can help clarify):
On Basilisk Crag, there are no rules about the PvP. If you're not in a town, pretty much expect to be ganked. Killing players who are several levels below you is okay. Chasing them from channel to channel is okay. Killing them even when they're fighting BAMs or doing escorts is okay.
It's basically a might > right mentality.
The solutions that I've found are to change channels if possible, go do something else so the gankers get bored, or try to find guild mates or other people to come protect you.
Some of the more creative people have started hiring themselves out as mercenaries, where they will take the gankers off your hands for a pretty penny. And there are even some guilds who have dedicated themselves to killing PKers and "keeping the server safe." So, there's that.
As for the infamy, that essentially forces people to stay in PvP mode instead of being able to phase out of it. It also means others who are *not* in PvP mode can approach and attack without being flagged for PvP.
For example, say I'm a level 25 Warrior and I've got 1000 infamy. I'm constantly flagged for PvP, even if I don't want to be. I'm out trying to quest, and three players see me. They can start attacking me without using their Outlaw Declaration. Infamy can also be annoying when grouping up for parties, because it makes your health bar red, which means it's harder to distinguish you from mobs. And when I partied up with someone with infamy in the SM instance, it put *me* into PvP mode every time I healed the person with infamy, which was hugely annoying. It didn't give me infamy, but it did make my health bar red and spam my chat with 'You have entered PvP' 'You have left PvP' messages.
At any rate, just like any community, there will be rude people and helpful people. People's patience is also running a bit thin because these topics seem to be coming up a lot in game; it's hard to go 10 minutes in Area chat without someone complaining about being ganked or camped or 3 v 1 'ed or whatever.
Also, some guilds have rules about that sort of thing. Like my guild, Synthesis, allows PKing but draws a distinction between PKing and griefing. Some guilds enjoy having free-for-all PvP where anything goes. And as I mentioned above, some guilds specifically try to protect players.
I hope some of this helped, and I hope your leveling goes more smoothly. =)
