A Question to the RPing Community

I've been RPing for around 10 years, and I have always prided myself to be a multi-para emoter. What worries me, however, is how impossible RP may seem to be on TERA. There's no walking, and there's not a separate channel to emote in. As a semi-elitist, I'm not sure how you can even RP here. So please, enlighten me. What... "mechanics" for lack of a better word, do you use to RP with on TERA? Is it all in /say? Is there a secret button that lets you walk that I'm missing, or is it acceptable to run? <<;

Most RP is done in /say, using * * or something like that to bracket emotes. No walk toggle at all at the moment though I though I read somewhere that is on the "list" of things they want to add.

Not ideal by any means. But we work through the pain lol

Its a good question. Without a formal RP Channel, character RP tag or even particular color for RP text...it difficult to identify peeps who might be open tp RP. You can monitor area chat, but its difficult to locate the source of conversation if you're just passing through.

As I see it, the only way to RP at all is in a Guild.

You guys are so depressing. -_- Seriously, all one needs to do is use their imagination with what one says. What you see is only what the game shows you, not what you make of it.

We aren't playing barbies, we don't need the perfect dollhouse.

Hello!

I definitely feel playing with the features would be nice and hope they are added soon but why is it a requirement to have them in order to talk in character?

Heck, I'm 90% IC in my postings here and in /area, /party, etc.

When I first started on text-only games we had nothing but our typing and people did lots of RP. I'm a big fan of features but don't let the lack of them impede your wanting to play how you want.

I guess you all have valid points. :) I have just never RPed in an MMO without the designated channels. It'll bother me, but I suppose it's doable. Thanks for the reassurance!

I was told once in IoD area chat that I was an idiot and bad RPer for saying this but, I'm going ot say it anyway.

A person could RP in area chat without anyone really knowing they were RPing. Example:
/area *shouts* Castanic Mystic looking for assistance in cleaning out Karasha's lair! Come find me next to the Lady Sersine.

Nothing overly obvious that this person is in character. There is a use of an 'emote', but again...nothing overt. To me, a good RPer is not judged in their use of emotes or if they walk, but in the quality of the experience others have with them.

I've RP'd in various games and always had a blast doing it. I've RP'd through raids, and no one thought it was weird, it didn't hold up the fights and it brought a sort of reason as to why we were there (besides the loot!). RPing does not mean you have to walk everywhere, or emote paragraphs, or emote to everyone around that you are sad. RPing is about the story, and that's what makes it fun!

MonVert does absolutely nothing to contribute to the OP's questions which are legitimate and the barbie reference is irrelevant.

Currently Tera lacks major emote systems as well as a walk function to really establish an appropriate RP setting that most NA games are accustomed to. The best example is LOTRO which was almost literally designed around RP due to the rich lore within JRR Tolkien's works. Tera wasn't the case as its fundamentally designed to be an action mmo.

The Council of Seven compiled a list of issues concerning RP that EmE have directly acknowledged
http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forums/roleplay/topics/Petition-Walk-Function-Custom-Emotes

So you can see from that list what we as RPer's are looking for.

In the meantime here is what you can do to accomodate.

RP is handled in say and emotes are within asteriks *self emote here* since there is no /me

When sitting down, instead of directly moving you can smoothly transition to a stand cycle by typing /stand. This provides a stand animation rather that flashing to a run animation.

Although there is no walk cycle it is appropriate (depending on the depth of RP you'd like to handle) to even emote those commands such as *Walks in and takes a quick glance at the Bartender, smiling at the small gathering he has come to meet*
