We use mumble because I can run a murmur server without paying for someone to host it for me. It has a low latency, and footprint on the host machine. As well as being open sourced. Oh, did I mention that it's free?

Now that is something I hadn't considered! So the server software is free? And you are able to run it from your PC without bogging down your game performance? If that's true, that's definately worth considering!

I prefer skype personally. But recently been using Raidcall and that seems pretty nifty as well. Both being free = win as well.

Yes, comes packaged with the client installer. I had it running on my Personal desktop, but moved it to my htpc due to my multitasking and not wanting to risk performance issues. It can run off of a laptop on your network if you wanted. Even then it uses very low resources, and has a low latency. I had 15 in my server and it was only using 2% of resources

FYI - Both Ventrilo and Teamspeak3 offer Server downloads as well that can be used free of charge as long as they're not used for commercial purposes. Every 'home' server I've ever connected to has had more latency than I would normally experience via a commercial server.

Just to add more talking points, Kuradora:

Vent can be set to auto adjust peoples volume as well

Ive had TS lag out just like vent does as well as mumble, there was an infamous "Are you going to pop bloodlust?!?" in my old wow guild on a TS server that came through about 15sec after the boss died lol

I... didn't even know the auto adjust feature was built into ventrilo (probably because nobody mentioned it, and I didn't think to ask). I didn't actually experience that feature until it was given as an added reason for me to switch to TS.

I don't touch mumble, so I have no idea on lag issues that does or doesn't have - I haven't seen/heard it on TS as of yet, but we'll see.

and my own personal opinions?
Vent > TS > Mumble

90% based on consistently better sound quality in vent servers and 10% based on Mumble having been annoying to setup to work properly for me

I'd have to agree that ventrilo is superior - we just happened to need that file library briefly, and I thought it looked like more people were using either TS or mumble on the CBTs(at least the server I tested on).

I still have my ventrilo server paid for, so I do still use it, but I'm on the TS wagon for now. Partially because I can(and I forgot to mention this) use an auto connect module on my guild website... rather than passing out the info every time someone forgets what it is and wants to bring in a friend. *shrugs* Just another perk for me, but with Tera's extreme chat filter giving me hashtags for server/port when I try to give out vent info, this is just more convenient right now.

1) ventrillo private server, hard capped at 8 concurrent unless you pay for it.
2) Teamspeak non-comercial server hard capped at 32 concurrent connections
3) Mumble's Murmur server hard capped at 1000 concurrent connections.

For myself with my ISP and a 5MB not Mb upload, I have not, nor has anyone in my server experiecnced any kind of lag or latency issues. Of course, the hardware in my home is not something you can go to walmart or best buy and buy off the shelf either. Assembled, set-up, and maintained by myself.
