Perhaps this is a familiar story to you.
Two experienced players purchase a new MMO. They've played the same MMOs before. DAOC, DF, UO, and WoW of course. They were both reasonably adept at PVE and PVP. Each new MMO brought the promise of the 'next great game.'
Both players missed the old community feeling from the early days of the MMO genre. Each desired to experience the thrill of fair PVP and ambushes out in the world.
So, they purchased the latest MMO. They rolled up on the PVP server and joined guilds.
There was a distinct difference. One was awash in a flood of green text; hundreds of guild-mates talking about ponies and Pokemon. Surrounded by players that would rather run to safe zones and talk trash than stand and fight. No cohesion, no nostalgic community feel. Soon, boredom sets in. Maybe he sets off for the next MMO.
The other player; however, was in a smaller, tight-knit guild. Everyone online was known, and they all loved to jump at the opportunity for some PVE, PVP, or what-have-you with their guild-mate. They had each others' backs. Clear goals, and regular meetings. This player had a voice in the guild, and a team of friends to conquer the world with.
What was the difference?
The first gamer went with a large, aimless guild. The other joined Gestalt. The other gamer knew that quality means more than quantity, and so reaped the benefits.
