120hz monitor?

I'm glad to see a thread where the OP isn't verbally pelted with rotten tomatoes for mentioning 3D.

The 3D in TERA is pretty decent - IF you can put up with the usual problems that occur on games where the developer hasn't bothered to load up the game in 3D :P

They are:

* Skybox textures render at the wrong depth (appear to be in front of distant land-based objects)
* Crosshair isn't 3D - and there is no option to turn it off if you want to use the NVidia 3D crosshair.
* Dynamic shadows have no 3D depth (it's like they're on the surface of the screen). Obviously you can get around this by turning them off.
* Water renders incorrectly (you get big gaps next to objects in the water).

I can't remember whether character labels and health bars appear at the same depth as the character, or whether they just sit on the surface of the screen. I *think* they're good though.

I've yet to have experienced a 120hz monitor, damn sounds like I'm missing out.

I love my Benq xl240t, I just wish I could actually get 120 fps in this game. Still, 60fps @ 120hz is still far better than 60fps @ 60hz.

This is the only LCD I have been able to stand playing games on after using a CRT for so long.

What's important is that both your fps and the hertz that your monitor is running at is constantly in sync. The human eye isn't really going to notice a difference between 120hz/fps and 60hz/fps unless they are out of sync.

Hence the reason for Vertical Sync option that most if not all video cards sport:

"Vertical sync locks the frame rendering rate to the monitor refresh rate. This improves image quality by eliminating horizontal tearing effects in the 3D image."

If you are not gonna use 3D Vision, 120hz monitors are a waste of money. I played Tera on 3D in the last EU CBT. Tera looks super good in 3D due to its superior HD texture. However, they still need to adjust the water quality to work with 3D. When water is in the background, you can see a transparent image on each eye. This problem can be fixed in WoW by lower the water quality setting. To be honest, you don't want to go back once you play Tera in 3D.

I don't know if this can be fixed by adjusting convergence or not. I will try it next CBT.

It's weird. I have no problem with the skybox.

Here are some of the 3D images files with the sky in the background. You can view them with 3D Vision Photo Viewer if you have 3D Vision enabled.

Those of you with the BenQ's, where did you buy them? I'm kind of having a hard time finding a reputable site for the BenQ XL2420T.

Nevermind, I went to shop.benq.us and got a ridiculous deal. Somehow I had missed the 'shop' area of benq.us and had written it off as a place not to purchase the monitor.

I was wondering how people enjoyed running this game with 120hz computer monitors. I've been shopping around looking at the different monitors and thought I'd see others opinions. I understand the game can be run in 3D as well, so I was wondering how people enjoyed that as well.

I'm kind of torn between grabbing a BenQ, an Asus, or a Samsung. The BenQ's only come in 24". If I decide to play the game in 3D I'd definitely get the 3D lightboost technology any of the brands could supply.

Another question I had was the quality of the picture for Tera. I've read a decent amount of reviews of 120hz monitors that mention that you don't quite get the color of non 120hz monitors so I was wondering if I should be worried about that, or if the 120hz will make me forget about the color anyway.

Thanks.

I have 2 ways I play games right now.

I have a 55" LED 3D 240hz TV (Samsung), that I have tried playing games on. I have to say, it is hella impressive! Though it is only 1 monitor =(

I also have 3, 27" samsung LED monitors that I use for Nvidia surround. It is also awesome. It is very cool in PvP situations as you can so more around you.

It is a toss up on which is better, it varies on the game you play. So for Tera, I choose the 3 monitors because of the view.

If you can't get higher than 60fps, then it's not really worth it to waste the extra money on that, just sayin'.

100% false. There is a substantial and very noticeable difference on a 120Hz monitor at 60fps in comparison to a 60Hz monitor, simply because of the refresh rate. There is no ghosting, tearing, or blur on a 120Hz monitor and you really don't even notice it until you switch to a 120Hz and all of a sudden you realize just what you've been missing out on.

You don't need the 3D experience to validate the difference either.

Bottom line, if you love gaming, there is absolutely no reason you should be playing on a 60Hz, unless you simply can't afford one. It is the most noticeable upgrade you will experience and your eyes will thank you for it.
