Action Combat question

I've been watching as videos lately on youtube with people showing off their Tera play in the beta weekends, and I have noticed something they all do that kind of worries me, so I figured I should ask on the boards to find out for sure.

The people in the videos always just stand infront of the enemy and only dodge attacks by using their "jump away skill".

I thought dodging attacks was suppose to be much more active than that, Why doesn't anyone strafe left/right, or even simply move away from the attacks manually?

Is it because it's impractical to actually move and not really needed? Or is this just a case of people who are still stuck in a traditional mmo mindset?

Thank you to any an all who have played during beta(s) and can clarify this for me.

i think its both of these. dont forget that it was low lvl content. its easy enough to just bash away at them when they attack so slow.

i was doing alot more moving when i soloed basilisks.

Either:

1) People don't know proper zoning.

2) Game isn't mechanically complicated enough to allow for it.

I dunno haven't played high-level PvP.

For close-up though, your dodge is more effective than simple movement. So why would anyone move as opposed to dodge when they need to avoid an attack?

Not to mention, your dodge/block acts as your cancel.

Simply put its because you can't move and attack at the same time. When you perform an attack, any sort of attack, your rooted to the ground, even for a split second.

I think like Coax said it is a little of both. I think since there was no need on the low level content to move they didn't. Since it was my first Tera experience last weekend I actually tried to move to avoid mobs attacks to get in that habit for later.

Well this may not apply to low level content, but unless there are no environments in the game where enemies will aggro due to proximity, I would think that just "jumping" back over and over again would lead to sticky situations.

Even there is no situation in which this would be true, I don't know, I guess I had some grand notion of actually having to be in frequent if not constant motion in order to combat effectively.

Constant motion takes no skill. Anyone can constantly run around.

Timing, reflex, positional awareness (distance), and careful execution of skills takes skill.

there is no frequent constant motion. its about using the skills at the right time to get the right effect. what you said about people being in the mindset of other MMOs is closer than you think.

you can just stand there and cast your skills in turn until it dies. here you have to pick your shots and do them when the time is right. everybody that thinks real action involves pushing your skills as quickly as possible is going to do badly later on.
