Damage Meters: Serious Talk Time(Long)

Which was the reason I joined a guild in the first place. All of the problems I have had with a damage meter is made a non-issue when in a guild. The source of the problem I have had was PUGs. Not the meter.

I have never had a problem with it because of my own preformace. I was the way people would use the meter as a weapon to attack others.

Personally, I think group members competing against eachother is a very bad thing. How likly are you to help another when you are also competing with them (I saw the part about this in the OP. It's a contradiction)?

I have mixed fellings about the subject. Personally, It had no direct effect on me. I don't care to use it and can keep up with the ones that do, just by knowing the class. Also, many of the causes of a wipe I have witnessed where not the fault of an under-preforming DPS. It was either acts of raw stupidity or people not working together.

I compete with my friends all the time. Friendly competition is a good thing as long as it doesn't go over board.

TERA is not about DPS, it is about survival, and I yearn for the day when those of you wanting meters in the game will realize this. Until then, please go back to WoW and stopped trolling TERA.

DPS is part of survival. Downing a boss faster (or during specific phases which require a lot of damage output) contributes to survival.

Like I said, it's a tool. A DPS meter is not a "player performance" meter. Someone doing high damage and dying is doing poorly. It exists to show you how much damage someone did and maybe even took. There are numerous other factors that go into consideration when thinking about a player's performance. If someone doesn't understand that, they are misusing the tool, and that's no ones fault but their own (and not the tool's fault either).

I understand the "15k or kick" scenarios, but if a person is asking for something like that, you instantly found out that you don't like that person. If the DPS meter DIDN'T exist, they would instead just be super critical of you in the party and perhaps cause the same negative situation. The problem is the PERSON, not the tool. Don't blame the tool because someone misuses it.

True, I have had friendly compatition myself (With my sister the most. Me and her are equals in many ways). It's just when it does go overboard is when it is a problem and IMO a likly one in PUGs (Again, the source of the problem is from PUGs. Not the meter).

Now, everyones arguing over what a Damage meter will do to the social aspect of the game right? so, lets go take a look at something that will be happening in our ever so lovely punching bag of manure that everyone so lovingly references.

It would seem, that the social aspect of raiding in wow, where loot is concerned, has gotten so bad that Blizzard is making raid loot automatic. No more need/greed/pass system. If you are in the raid, you can win gear by auto roll and distribute. Kicker is, its all non-trade-able too!. In the explanation of the new system, blizzard basically calls raiders drama queens to boot, they get 1 point for that at least.

What brought about this horrid social interaction? Its anyone's guess, But we can at least point to DPS Meters as a contributing factor, that no one can deny.

So, do we want this contributing factor in tera? I don't and many others don't as well. Will it lead to the destruction of the community? Who knows, but it will help it.

Wow everyone here is bored since we can't play Tera lol spamming the forum so fast lol.
I'm really on idc as far as dps meter goes because well i play freaken tank. Also i never had experience with them. Personally i think its great because i know last game i played it was so obvious people been lazy and pretending they are doing work but when you call them out its like i'm doing stuff.... Personally i can't stand slackers, and i think dps meter just make me feel better when i kick them lol. And i know tell the difference between a less skilled and newer player to some one who just slacking. Maybe because i tank for long but its really obvious to me.

Did i miss the link with proof of DPS meters, or are people just thinking that if they believe it's real it will magically appear?

I've been tanks, heals and dps in past MMOs and I've always done great in either role, Always top 3 dps in raids, and my heals were always just as good and accurate.

I still hate dps meters, I've always had them up when available but they're like a bad habit. Its like running laps for fun, you just want to jog around and enjoy the moment, but if you have a stopwatch with you, you automatically start tracking time and trying to beat your own time.

It makes sense if you run for a living and dps meters make equally sense if your life revolves around sitting there playing all day and have no other life.

The rest of us I think just play for fun ?

They should add them like in SWTOR if anything, dump the results into a text file or whatever that obsessed people can check offline after a fight.

The problem with people trying to make threads like this is the OP always makes the same mistake. They talk about "damage meters" and "measuring dps", that isn't what most people want.

We want a Combat Log Parser that will show us a variety of statistics, including, but not limited to, damage done, damage taken, healing done, healing taken, move rotation, status effects, damage blocked/absorbed and just about anything else that could be useful in a combat situation.

The idea isn't too see who is doing "OMG 1337 TOP MAD DPS" but to see who is being effecient in combat and performing the role they signed up to when they rolled their class and who is bringing sub-par performance to the group and holding everyone else back.

Why does the group have to suffer because we don't have the tools to root out those who want to be carried?

If you don't like Parsers and just want to 'play for fun', guess what? Don't use parsers. People who want to play casualy and people who want to be hardcore really shouldn't be playing together anyway, the casual player holds the hardcore player back and the hardcore player puts too much stress on the casual so if a casual ends up in a hardcore group using meters, or a hardcore thinks his group is going to slow or isn't up to his performance level, find another group. You'll enjoy the game a lot more.

The bottom line is, everyone plays differently, everyone plays for different reasons and one group of people isn't better or automatically right. Everyone has the right to play the way they want to play with like minded individuals.
