I don't see the big deal about GW2. To me, the game looks like crap compared to Tera.
Rift did go semi free to play, Rift lite allows players to play to 20.
Allows them to play indefinitely but only to 20....
B/F2P requires a cash shop to keep the game online, updates, maintenance, etc. Which means they NEED to have good stuff in the shop or no one will buy anything and the shop is pointless.
P2P means you get everything for $13-15.
That is so damn cheap for an entire months worth of playtime and allowing me access to everything the game has to offer.
Cash shops make it so less people pay more for more people to play....
You should all read up on some stories of people losing themselves to the cash shop to be cool.... thousands of dollars in a short time.
To much "nay-saying" going on here. I honestly think the game will stay P2P for a while. Just because a game has a "trial" period does not mean it has gone F2P.
@Gezodiac
Yeah, a buddy of mine got sucked in to the cash shop in one game. I would estimate he spent somewhere in the vicinity of $500p/mo.
Many games are going free to play either because they suck, or they used to be good but got old and now suck.
None of the new mmo's that don't suck go f2p or eventhink about it.
Wow Cata xpac, Rift, SWTOR, Tera are all the top titles to release in the last year and none of them are going f2p, or thinking about it.
GW2 is a bit of a red herring. People claim it's good, and their marketing strategy has convinced a giant amount of fanbois that this is true. Gratz to them. However, in spite of this, they know that it's a failed game model that no one in their right mind would ever sub to. Thus they're trying to get a giant initial amount of cash from one time purchases, and then being free.
Other companies are not going to follow this model, why should they lose all the sub money? Not one good mmo that released last year has done this. The fact that GW2 follows the model of all the old and/or crappy games should tell people something.
