So according the lore of the game, all the races and regions put aside their issues and ended their battles amongst one another to unite and fight the Argons...right? Well not quite it seems.
Our guild and a few others on our server are currently engaged in GVG, so we decided to declare a ceasefire during the Nexus. Since we are on a lower population server, we need all the bodies we can get to fight shiny monsters and we didn't want people ducking out for fear of being ganked while running from one nexus to the next. All the guilds agreed and it was fine. Besides, the Nexus areas are safe zones anyway...well...kinda.
Problem 1
It turns out that despite being "safe zones," certain skills will still hit members of warring guilds within the Nexus. Within the first few minutes, we noticed that the sorcs' Hailstorm was hitting people, particularly the lancers who were right the mobs' faces. Not wanting all our lancers to bite the dust, we announced the bug and all luckily everyone cooperated and warring sorcs stopped using the skill. Then we noticed Retaliate was hitting too...and sorcs' Flaming Barrage. I'm not sure if there are more skills that are bugging out and ignoring the whole safe zone, but this is a pretty big issue. What good is a safe zone if skills can still hit, and most of those skills belong to one class?
Problem 2
Healers cannot heal or rez members of warring guilds within the Nexus. As a priest, I generally will throw random people heals to help the group stay up and rez anyone I see go down. Now that we're in GVG, that puts limitations on all the healers.
Suggestions
Talking with a few guild members, we thought it would be better for the Nexus areas to become a special kind of safe zone where GVG was basically put on ceasefire automatically. This means no skills hit warring members, heals/rez are not restricted. Why? It's mutually beneficially for warring guilds to put the fighting aside and be able to take down the mobs as per usual. Not to mention it would fit with the lore of banding together despite differences. GVG makes it harder for smaller servers to take down the Nexus.
Some might say, "Don't do GVG during the weekends/Nexus then." Well, Nexus is only during weekends when most people get to play more, which also happens to be when we get more clamor for GVG. Why do we need to choose when there is a solution for us to have both?
As for traveling between Nexus, I personally find no problem with that being a free-for-all. Guilds can decide to have a ceasefire or go all out.
Additionally, a helpful addition to GVG could be an official "ceasefire" option added to the UI where the guilds could both agree to put the fighting on hold in a certain area and/or duration of time. A few of these guilds including ours have had a select few members who suggested they wouldn't honor our agreement. Being able to call a ceasefire through the UI would essentially put the GVG on pause and not allow members to fight under the conditions set. There are many uses for something like this, such as not allowing GVG in lower level areas to prevent lowbies from being ganked, being able to attend an event at a certain time or place without chaos, etc. Of course, both parties would have to agree on the terms and would have to mutually agree to end the ceasefire prematurely.
Any thoughts?
