This game won't die because of lack of fun etc., but it will die because of the terible community.
I have been playing mmos for over a decade and I have never had more bad experiences.
I am a level 60 priest. I picked a healing class because I actually enjoy helping others.
I just hit level 60 this week and have been constantly kicked from queue groups even before we start not due to my gear level (level 141) but due to the fact that I haven't run a certain dungeon.
You are not allowed to join groups unless you already done current dungeon.
This game hasn't even been out a month yet and everyone expects people to know what to do in every dungeon.
I am forced to only do anything in this game with guildmates.. If guildmates not online then I should just log if I finished my dailies...
Also don't get me started on the LFG chat or Area chat.. none stop trolls.
Don't the "hardcore" players realize if you constantly treat people like crap they will actually cancel accounts and this game will die?
Doesn't anybody help players anymore?
What happend to playing a game for fun instead of just gear or fake gold?
I've been experiencing troubles with the community too, but not just in dungeons. Right now the LFG chat on my server is littered with trolls. Normally they're ignorable, but it's gotten to the point where if anyone asks a legit newbie question (because they're, you know, new.) they get the 4chan treatment and are shot down. You get people asking how to do better at tanking, the ultimate response is "to not suck." or "reroll and stfu." They spend their time talking about crude content that shouldn't be in a chat designed to locate other players for BAMs and dungeons. Yeah, I get it's the same thing as a general chat and that's how people use it, I'm fine with that. But the trolls even yell at people for using the LFG to look for groups, spending their time talking about twisted stuff like raping someone's child. It isn't game-quitting bad, but it is irksome. I left crap like Maplestory to get away from these kinds of people. Now I hope there's a server- changing item for sale one day I can use.
This is kind of the sad truth about MMO communities at large. It's never again going to be like tight-knit communities you've experienced in older games, because the genre is enormous now and every game wants to attract correspondingly huge numbers to make more money. It just isn't conducive to good community. If you aren't in a sufficiently large guild with players who aren't total jerks, it just isn't all that fun, and it really isn't TERA's fault.
People are just [filtered]s.
MMO communities have always been garbage. It's called finding a guild and making friends. It's not hard. Just talk to people in your guild and ask them if they want to run with you. Stay within your guild or a circle of friends.
And it isn't hard to turn off area or LFG should you find it so flagrant.
To my experience, the community is only bad on this forum. When I join pugs or ask for help in area chat, everyone is very nice!
Welcome to the real world, its worse out there than in game. When i was young and first started online games the community was great because we were all raised in different times. The internet had just come out and was super new, familys were close, we all played OUTSIDE and TV wasnt sending such crap messages. All these people you see being complete and utter [filtered]es are 25 and younger. I never see people my age or older (im 30) acting that way. We all were brought up to respect others, not bully, not say harsh things with the expressed intent of hurting someone.
I only see things getting worse. Until someone puts their foot down, it wont stop. There needs to be bannings on a daily basis if you go out of your way to verbally abuse someone, if you troll chat channels non stop etc. Trust me, you will get MORE money, and more loyal players if you assist the people in building a good community that they WANT to log into at the end of the day
The solution to all of this is to find a guild that doesn't suck.
Tera has its share of douches, but there is much worse out there.
Ever taken part in Guild Wars 1 high end PvP community?
Think of the douchebaggiest Lancer you have come across, multiply his doucheness by a factor of 10, and you have the average mindset of the GW Hall of Heroes regular. That community was so bad, GW1 Halls PvP is actually dead now. Not because of any update that ruined it, but because the community was so elitist and stuck up they outright refused to allow anyone new into the inner circle. As people gradually left, no one new came to take the place. If you have Guild Wars and enter their HoH instance you will notice it is now empty 90% of the day.
It is this reason among many I stay the hell away from GW2.
