Another thing that crossed my mind, is that some of it is just unavoidable, in a game like this where tanks are at a premium: the tanks are free to pick and choose whatever group they want. Unfortunately, If a lancer joins your group he's doing you a favor, chances are finding a different one is one click away... for him.
If you manage to find me in pug, I'll let you punch me all day.
Masochists unite! <3
I think the appeal of the lancer class makes it so that people who really want to solo or take a lot of credit for things tend to pick the class. Although the mystic and lancer duo I've been in has been insanely easy. Lancer is one of the easiest classes to play and be okay with, being great with a lancer is another matter. People play lancer and do well for the most part, but in instances they just go all wobbly (not always, but teaching a lancer how to tank on SM was a little bit much). The truth is that there needs to be variation in a class. Lancers should be able to DPS effectively. Priest and Mystic should be able to DPS effectively. The fact that you are shoehorned into a specific role for the whole game is puts those classes at a bit of a disadvantage. I think that would definitely help get more players into the tank/support classes, but at the same time will they really be learning how to play them effectively. Double edged swords all over the place.
Stop hating on Lancers : (
I'm a Lancer and I'm nice! I like to be helpful and fair when in a group, we are an awesome class - quit being mean dammit! It's not the classes fault that [filtered]s exist.
Its really simple actually.
Good players tend to start off their mmo career as some form of support (tank, healer, cc, what-have-you)*
Bad players tend to go straight to dps
Over time, the bad players get tired of nobody wanting to play with them, because they suck and there are plenty of dps out there to pick from, so they become bad support so people like them and get on a huge powertrip.
Over time, the good players realize there just aren't enough people worth actually supporting in mmos, so they just go off and become awesome dps or dedicated crafters or just quit all together.
The result is that most tanks suck, most dps suck. The good tanks are the good players who arent burned out on it yet, and the good dps are the experienced tanks and healers who gave up trying to help people.
And this game, this game is very few peoples first mmo.
*Old style rogue classes (pre wow era) tend to create good players, because the class usually ends up being one of 'how well can you poke holes straight through the game mechanics'. The people who find the exploity things in games are generally the good players.
I prefer having both warrior and lancer in the party with lancer as the primary tank and warrior as the subtank. 2 ranged dps + a healer of choice. Should the lancer fall the warrior can fill the lancer position till the healer can get the chance to ress the lancer so the warrior can resume the dps position.
There are also some bosses where warrior is just the better choice of tank over the lancer and vice versa.
I say just give it time, people will eventually mellow out, (well not really but one can hope >.>).
