This is an actual internet skill set - and people practice it hardcore.

Make no mistake - For someone to know what pisses your average person off enough to respond to their comments is a skill.

These people do not feel this way or even believe in the things they say 99% of the time. they simply KNOW that by nature, most people are good - so the easiest way to draw attention is to say something so outlandish it forces them to reply out of shear rage.

The second you do that they have won and are laughing at you for taking them seriously.

Example - Everyone knows wow was a good game in it's day, for some it still is. No on can dispute it was the biggest MMO of all time. But still people in Tera General and Rift General Swtor General still bag on wow - not because its a bad game, they do it just to get the wow fans pissed off enough to start ranting in chat.

It's a game to them, and you people that fall for it are thier victims.

The OP is correct. Anyone born pre-90s can attest to the degradation of dialogue by the average person talking under the guise of anonymity. The attitude issues and total disregard and respect to a person, their beliefs, or opinions can be seen anywhere a comment or chat box is available online.

Apparently none of these people realize just how sadly they demean themselves by wanting to speak in such a hateful way, constantly. The "toughen up" responses are foolish and only ignores the problem. I change my chat tab to /party or /whisper in Tera but it doesn't change the fact that people are being the typically villains in mass.

Most of these people weren't raised to carry themselves in such a demeaning way and certainly wouldn't act the same offline, so why do it online? My non-hateful attitudes and treatment of others online is the same as they are offline, so I have to constantly give the people, I party with or see in-game, the benefit of the doubt that they're not a scumbag offline in the real world as they are online in-game.

In the end, it's all really just plain sad that people enjoy behaving in a hateful way the majority of their time online.

Sadly, many of the internet attitudes are starting to transfer into the real life space. The general desensitizing of people to disrespectful attitudes and hateful speech is, in my opinion, causing general havoc in the United States especially.

For those of us without a strong group of people who came with them to this game, wading through the garbage to find a halfway decent group of people is challenging. When every question, even the ones that are good, relevant, and not easily figured out, is answered with bile, venom, and general douchebaggery it is difficult both to get answers, or help people by giving answers.

I simply treat people the way I wish to be treated. I answer questions helpfully, I ignore the vitriol and go about my way. This has garnered me some truly decent people to play with as birds of a feather generally flock together.

Is there a /mute option in Tera? If there is, that probably would help quite a bit. I know it's a little extra work, but I feel this may help resolve some of the degrading comments being said.

Some of you are talking like you've never played any other game before. This behavior isn't TerA exclusive..

Why don't you write to your congressmen and see if they will make an Anti-trolling bill...oh wait:

And people realize how stupid that is.

I find Area chat to be ridiculous a lot of the time, it doesn't bother as much as it distracts me : P I can't look away from the nonsense rolling down chat.

Honestly I agree with the OPs sentiments, but I also think there's not a lot that can be done - people can and will talk utter rubbish, as much as they want, when they want.

You can always just un-tick the Area channel for your chat tab : )

honestly, the easiest way to avoid this, if it bothers you that much, is roll on the RP server. RP servers tend to have a nicer and older population, and you get less of it. Not to say it won't exist at all, but you will at least get less. This is the first game in quite awhile I am not rolling on the RP server just for the reason.

No! The OP demands that everyone share his feelings / morals / beliefs / rules / values/ insanity. All those who do not obey must perish. All those against, are scum and deserve ban hammah!

Can't stand Area Chat >> Continue to read it

Solution: Disable Area Chat >> Don't want to

Solution: Move server >> Don't want to

Solution: Get over it >> That's not what should be done

Solution: Ban all those who have different values than OP >> YES PLEASE!

Funny how that works, eh?

@Wingless tbh most kids born after 1990 are raised to believe that the only person that matters is themselves. Being Self centered comes from having parents that threw fits and were disrespectfull to other adults/people in the child's life be it a teacher, coach, divorced parent if they were not catering to the child's sensitive sense of self worth. thereby training the child that others deserve to be treated cruely while they themselves are the only one deserving of consideration. How I have had to reassure my childrens teachers that I want my children pushed. How shocked the teachers are when I blamed my children's lack of trying if they failed instead of them. Parents have become ignorant and Thier children are proof of that fact. Quit hyper sensationalizing every thing about a child, bring them up with humility, teach them that no one is to blame for Thier bad behavior other than themselves and for gods sake give them consequences for Thier actions. Maybe then we would see attitudes begin to revert back to a more respectful time.

I 100% agree with you OP. As someone who remembers the good old days of Everquest, there was this thing the players liked the refer to as etiquette.

You treated each other with respect, trolling was non-existent, and any obscene behavior would result in you being alienated by the server rapidly.

Unfortunately, the education system in America has gone downhill rather quickly in the past decade and the kids coming up in their teens and even the young twenty somethings have no respect, no culture, and no moral standards.

It's not just TERA though, it's every MMO, especially the transient group of players that flock to the new game, trash it, and go back to the hole they crawled out of. In general, gamers have rather poor social skills, especially the MMO crowd.

There's a reason I call the chatbox the "idiot box" and I almost always turn it off. Just remember, these people are scum, and they will reap in life what they sow. Don't give them the attention that they so desperately crave and eventually they go away.

They are usually so flawed mentally that they don't get past lvl 30 in most games I play anyways. I highly recommend getting out of the low level zones asap and looking for other mature gamers such as yourself to team up with, to escape the human scum that is the internet generation.

I know not all of you young ladies and gentlemen are part of the problem, but the percentage of human scum versus respectful gamers has drastically shifted in the past decade. It's very sad indeed, it is even sadder that it is purely a reflection of the world itself as well.

Rise above, be civilized, treat each other with respect, and ignore those who don't do the same.
