And to answer your question OP, No i do not think this game will be too asian for the western market. I think people are dying for something new and a little (KEYWORD LITTLE) grind is something I think we all subconsciously want after being spoon fed welfare epics and all the other hand holding that seems to be the norm lately in every new MMO released.

This is the first Asian to western mmo I have ever played and I'm just glad that Tera isn't like WoW.

Yes the quests are repetitive..it is a fairly large flaw but then again, the level curve is very very short. Since nobody else has fixed that problem then just look at it as the quests for killing x number of things just teaches you how to use those shiny new skills you picked up in town. That's really all it's for.

Max leveling in less than a month = not a grind though...simply have to argue with you there.

BSGO actually had a good way of dealing with quest grind...but I hear people still complaining about it so *shrug*. In a game where the story tells you about invasions and nasty opponents coming to destroy your civilization the quests should be very warlike in nature...they should be tied to objectives that push the toon out to the front lines, and any repetitiveness should be allayed by increasing the difficulty every time you do it. Repeatables actually make sense in a war..that's oftentimes the reality of it.

the UI features are what screams Asian to me...

can't even re-size the chatlog...

there are so many UI features missing from Tera that most other western P2P MMO's have...

to me the UI of Tera feels more like a F2P Asian MMO...i hate it...

My point was, more different kind of monsters, raids, warfronts, anything, theres everything triple time more than you ever get here.

My point is that you're used a seriously flawed, and biased, viewpoint.

Most monsters in Rift are not unique. You can see the same models in Silverwood as you can see in Stillmore.

The last raid released, Rise of the Phoenix, had no new models and the only thing "new" was a re-skinning of the final boss from a previous model of NORMAL enemies, and a boss in xAP. That's it.

You are wrong.

Western MMOs are just as much of a grind. It's just a gear grind, rather than a monetary/level/resource grind.

That said, the leveling in Tera is no more of a grind than any other modern MMO. The quest structure is the same. However, It's actually more involved due to the combat system, especially if you're fighting BAMs or doing instances. That is the appeal. Same MMO feel, new combat system.

1. o wait western mmorpg do a better job? Did i miss something when i play WoW, did every single mob have 50 different attack pattern? am i missing something here? Coz all western mmorpg mob are pretty much the same, heck most of those game lot easier dude to the old tab target combat.

2. What western mmorpg don't have grind? In Tera you grind for gear to enhance in western mmorpg you just grind for gear. In the end both a grind. Also none of that is required in Tera, enchanted equips are a total extra for those whole want to spend the time for it, i roll full +0 and i do just fine in PvP and PvE. Heck i beat people in full gold and i'm full blue because i'm more skilled.

3. Again enchanting which is the only lottery in this game is total opinional, not required for those who want to try their luck for an award a gold sink.

So if the game is western all those grind are ok? People spend 8hrs a day raiding on WoW, no one call that a grind fest. What if a western game has you grinding hours a day for gear its ok but an asian game ask you to grind its instantly label other asian grind fest and its bad? Am i the only one who see problem with this logic here?

1: In most mmo's is a wide variety of mob types and you do not keep seeing same mobs in next zone that you do in following zone. Are there repeats? certainly but DON'T fight X mob in zone 1 then in zone 2 fight same exact mob that is fairly uncommon, sometimes fight them as a boss in one zone and next they are a boss but take DCUO for example. Are very few examples where enemies repeat zone to zone, and usually moving from one group type to another is good design. My problem with tera is fighting trees in first area, and second area, in fact almost every mob on island shows up in next zone with no alterations makes game feel stale but is really a minor concern.

2: All mmo's have a grind but it is TYPE of grind that exists and appeals to some and not others. Westerns mmo's focus there grind on end game, doing raids and dungeons. Is NOT THE SAME! as killing boars for 10 hours for some superficial materials. My point was that crafting and enchanting require random junk off of mobs and that this kind of thing doesnt fly in the west and never has. Is why WoW has removed most of this kind of thing from random mobs, most mmos have really because we don't want to sit in a zone killing random monsters with out a driven purpose that is what we consider a GRIND!

3: going to call BULL[filtered] right now! that is like telling a WoW player they dont have to enchant there gear to raid, or slot there gems to raid. YOU will have to enchant your gear in order to do any end game content and not get your tail kicked in. Will get people spamming " lfm for X dungeon! must have +6 or better enchanted gear! " i'm not a fool despite what people may think... enchanting is not optional and never will be if you want to progress you will HAVE to do it and presently it is a TERRIBLE system!

Edit: just let me reiterate that i like tera, i enjoy tera, and generally speaking it is a great game combat wise i am just afraid that all other aspects will be a turn off to most folks. Seriously let us be honest here... Aside from the combat in this game Tera really doesnt do anything else terribly well... political system we cant really see yet so no way to say how that will work out, all in all i just dont feel like Tera does anything well cept actual combat and scale of monsters. Everything else feels tacked on atypical asian mmo mechanics.

1: I can cite other MMOs, more mainstream, where they used the same models and just re-skinned. A lot.

2: You're right, it's not the same. It's still a grind. It still has a purpose at the end, it's just a different way of getting there.

3: Enchanting is entirely optional for everything currently in-game, and everything currently in kTera. Min/Maxers/Elitists are the minority. Yes, you will see that. It's been in every MMO, ever. It's not dominant, however. And it's never been required, except for if you're on the bleeding edge of content which REQUIRES elitism to even progress at all in those fights. Those are NOT fights you will see pugs doing.

i just want to re-size the chatlog, not anything else in the UI - there is no option to do so

also, if i make any part my UI that IS adjustable to be any smaller, i cant read any quest font or UI font...

Can't you just press alt and adjust the size? It's the first thing I did when I logged in. I changed WASD to ESDF and moved/resized everything to fit on the bottom 15% of the screen.

I will agree with this part. I couldn't find a way to adjust the default text on the UI (chat text yes). Makes resizing the UI a bit pointless if you can't read it at the new size.

OT:
The grind for gear is something you do endgame. You hit max level quick, then you press through gear by grinding quests / dungeons / raids / PVP. This is something that is common with WOW, Rift, SWTOR (less so but still), etc. People like this design because it's easy, and they get a sense of accomplishment when they hit max inside their free month. It gives them time to check out a little, or most, of the endgame available in the current game.

"Asian" MMOs put the grind into leveling and the process used to get there. Questing is all just go kill XXX of these, go gather XXX plants, go talk to that guy 10 feet in front of me.... Now western MMOs are pretty much the same in that aspect of questing but the difference is that you hit max level much faster so you get that sense of accomplishment. There was a small percentage of people (if any, can't remember TBH) that hit max level in Aion / Lineage 2 within the first, free month. People get discouraged and go back to what ever game they were playing before (WOW in most cases).

I don't see this problem with TERA. Reason being is that the combat is actually fun. I don't mind NPCs sending me to go kill 498734 boars. Sure the actions are a bit repeated when you killed a bunch of them but when I'm about to get sick of killing them is when they send me to a new area with different mobs. Outside dungeons (why don't more MMOs do these?), solo BAM farming, BAM grouping, dungeons, PVP.... everything is enjoyable when the combat is fun. Not to mention, watching some of the endgame dungeons on youtube look absolutely amazing. TERA will be my home for a while once it's released. Loving the beta and can't wait for it.
