Is this game a "story" or a "world"?

I just got off newbie isle and am realizing the storyline quests are not ending. This makes me feel like I am in a linear single player game, good for one time through. I have seen this kind of fail design in many AAA MMO's which have bit the dust after a few months or years.

Please, someone tell me that this game is not one long story. If so, that is lame, lame, lame and I will cancel now. MMORPG's need to go back to being "worlds", not "stories".

There are alot of story quests per zone that tell a story in its own, and its all a bit of a greater design. But the story itself is pretty weak, and lackluster. So If your playing this game for the story, this is not the one.

I am playing it for the "world" aspect, if there is any. If I can ignore quests and not be penalized in where I can explore, I would much prefer that. I just cannot believe the devs have not been tracking forums for years and seeing how many folks are sick of the hand-holding. Following a "storyline" is like the devs playing your character for you.

it's more like you playing your part in what is happening. you can do what you want but you are on a mission. once the story is over you can explore as you will and make your mark how you see fit. although I feel PVE servers dont have as many options...

You can do just that. You can explore anywhere you want, after newb island. Pick up some side quests. The story quests are there pretty much for getting you to quest hub to quest hub. But, be warned, your second play through will follow the same route as your first character. As far as quest and story quest go. Personally, I would do the story quests, they net a significant amount of exp and pretty good gear.

There can be some alternation to quest lines. For example, I went to Tuwangi Mire and skipped Valley of Titans.

Thanks for all the informative replies. Seems I made a big mistake in not researching this game more. I have just gotten to the point of HATING having to follow some scripted lame storyline and not having the freedom to just have a character that lives and adventures freely (within the parameters of his capabilities, of course) in the world.

But if any devs are listening, there are players like me that HATE, HATE, HATE storyline gameplay in an MMORPG. I love lore and setting, but I HATE having to follow a script in which my part is pre-written.

Now, on my way to cancelling. What a waste of $59.99.

You're the one paying a monthly sub for a single player game masquerading as an MMO.
