UO didnt call them toons, but I never got to play EQ (Pretty sure it came after UO) but in L2, SWG, FFXI etc, I never heard toon. It wasn't till wow, and so I as well assumed it was originating from wow.

Well, Ive never played 'Toonville', so I personally always called them characters or just chars for short. Other people can call them toons or paperdolls if they want, but I will say character or char.
