Xp loss on death, potential level loss, and ability loss. I Know this sounds Like sacrilige. The reasonm I think so is, because Having real consequences to death has a few beneficial results.

You suddenly do not bite off more thjan you think you can chew. The durrent death system is not real enough to Punish idiotic play. People WILL by it's very existence either improve...or remain Low level... Everquest used to let you get away with 10 levels before they started xp loss. And it worked well there.

Encounters become memorable. Several years ago, I was Playing Everquest, and I had just levelled my Druid to level 29,.. I was Bound at one Location as I travelled a long way to get my level 29 spells. I was asked if I would Teleport someone for 50m plat... for me at the time this was a Lot. I decided to stay and wait at the druid rings wating for my fare.

The I hear wings beating slowly, and everyone at the rings ran for cover. I look behind me.. and I see Grimfeather.. Red conned Boss Gryphon.. I tried to Outrun it, and died. I Lost xp, Lost my level..lost my group teleports and lost those 50 platinum I wanted. I ressurected way back where I was Bound, naked.. No armor, No weapons... just my spells.. I had to run all the way back to loot my corpse. Back then if you did NOT loot it within a certain period of time, your corpse would decay, and all your items would go bye Bye.

If I ever go back to play Everquest, No matter what alt I create, i will go back with each...and Kill Grimfeather, over and over and over. That f ***er still owes me 50 platinum.

What is my point here? Xp loss, and level loss, and ability loss, made that encounter so memorable I STILL tell people about it. For years, the beat of those wings made my heart skip a beat. I still remember the sound...wooooomp........wooooomp.........woooooomp.........

I have played wow, I have played CoH, I have played SWG, and None has ever ingrained such an encounter in my memory.

When there are real consequences to death, it changes the way you play, it changes what you tackle, it does make you more conservative. But it also does two things.

It ensures that as you level you gain skill...so a level 60 whatever, unless he purchased the account on ebay...or got carried by his or her guild, more oftern than Not, knows How to play...

Those that cannot improve do not advance.

second...it will leave memories In your minds that will last you years.

Anyway, Just my thoughts, I hope it inspires mature conversation.

Yeah kinda sucks that none of the new games ever have a real penalty now

Lets let the retards be retards with no fear of repercussion!

....
That EQ story reminds me of a friend of mine who fell asleep at his keyboard once and autoran into Kithicor Forest and died god knows where :'D
He couldn't find himself so he had to get our necro friend to summon him out haha

Weird, I've played quite a lot and it only just occurred to me that I don't really know what happens when you die, so I guess not much!

I keep hoping for a roguelike MMO (so if you die that's it, you have to reroll) where if you see a high-level player it will be impressive. Raids would be the most terrifying thing ever, and it would encourage developers to spend a lot of time crafting varied lowbie zones.

I would be disappointed if they implemented something like this. To me, too much of a punishment for death is discouraging.

It may or may not force players to improve or be left in the dust, but I don't think it's quite fair to decide like that how well or to what quality another person plays the game at end level. If a person wants to improve their performance, they will improve regardless. If they are not compelled to be very good, what purpose is there to keep them stagnant at level 20 or 30? I say let them continue.

If it's your (general you, not the OP specifically) own game experience you're concerned about, then I suppose it's just a matter of actively not grouping with people who you think are sub-par.

Just my opinionionions.

Didn't even have to read past the first sentence....no. An emphatic NO.

This is my absolute least favorite mechanic in any game EVER. Why the hell would I play something that would set me back hours of play? Ever played Maple Story? Yeah, I don't play that because of this exact mechanic.

Besides, in TERA you have the chance to lose crystals and your stamina goes to 0.

Or a buddy can powerlevel you through to quite a high level and you can have no skill whatsoever.

I don't think doing any of this will make people more skilled. In fact, it may make people less skilled because if penalties are really severe, no one will want to try to experiment, try new tactics, see if they can or cannot solo that BAM, etc.

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying your argument isn't very good.

Also, it's one thing to do this PVE, it's a different story in OWPVP

If you can die 5 times and probably not give a damn it doesn't count as a penalty

So..if you die you are retarded? That's kinda harsh don't you think? I agree there should be a penalty if you die, but do you really have to result to name calling, also I hope you don't die, because I guess that means you're retarded too?

These kinda of penalties in recent MMOs just aren't conducive to actually having a large playerbase/population. It doesn't lead to better players, it leads to less players. Often times deaths are not due to the fault of that dead player, and that would be frustrating to be punished for other player's mistakes or bugs in the game or whatever. Many gamers just don't have the tolerance, I know I don't.

Not what I meant. I mean the people who are constantly doing stupid things and never learn from it. If they actually lose things when they die they have more incentive to learn rather than progress to max level and continue to act like an idiot every time someone tries to group or raid with them.
