Xp loss on death, potential level loss, and ability loss. I Know this sounds Like sacrilige. The reasonm I think so is, because Having real consequences to death has a few beneficial results.
You suddenly do not bite off more thjan you think you can chew. The durrent death system is not real enough to Punish idiotic play. People WILL by it's very existence either improve...or remain Low level... Everquest used to let you get away with 10 levels before they started xp loss. And it worked well there.
Encounters become memorable. Several years ago, I was Playing Everquest, and I had just levelled my Druid to level 29,.. I was Bound at one Location as I travelled a long way to get my level 29 spells. I was asked if I would Teleport someone for 50m plat... for me at the time this was a Lot. I decided to stay and wait at the druid rings wating for my fare.
The I hear wings beating slowly, and everyone at the rings ran for cover. I look behind me.. and I see Grimfeather.. Red conned Boss Gryphon.. I tried to Outrun it, and died. I Lost xp, Lost my level..lost my group teleports and lost those 50 platinum I wanted. I ressurected way back where I was Bound, naked.. No armor, No weapons... just my spells.. I had to run all the way back to loot my corpse. Back then if you did NOT loot it within a certain period of time, your corpse would decay, and all your items would go bye Bye.
If I ever go back to play Everquest, No matter what alt I create, i will go back with each...and Kill Grimfeather, over and over and over. That f ***er still owes me 50 platinum.
What is my point here? Xp loss, and level loss, and ability loss, made that encounter so memorable I STILL tell people about it. For years, the beat of those wings made my heart skip a beat. I still remember the sound...wooooomp........wooooomp.........woooooomp.........
I have played wow, I have played CoH, I have played SWG, and None has ever ingrained such an encounter in my memory.
When there are real consequences to death, it changes the way you play, it changes what you tackle, it does make you more conservative. But it also does two things.
It ensures that as you level you gain skill...so a level 60 whatever, unless he purchased the account on ebay...or got carried by his or her guild, more oftern than Not, knows How to play...
Those that cannot improve do not advance.
second...it will leave memories In your minds that will last you years.
Anyway, Just my thoughts, I hope it inspires mature conversation.
