If you make an argument for this being a good thing because it makes leather workers more rare. Then you could make the same argument for the other professions.
So I guess the root of the problem is that the difficultly of gather for leatherworking is no where near the other professions. If all crafting professions where difficult that would be another story, but they are not. Right now your only option for getting 50 dawnhides is to broker them. On my server they are going for like 50 silver. That means you need 25 gold to get to 50 crafting so you can start crafting low level gear.
Granted the economy is not where near stable but right now the supply of dawnhides is probably really high with everyone being low. In the future that supply will get lower not to mentioned prices will inflate because everyone will have more money. So I don't see broker prices getting cheaper.
arent you able to extract leather from gear.....
It requires 2 x Dawnhide and 2 x Simple Salts(vendor) to make Zalisleather, which yields 2 pieces per crafting. You get 2 points each time you craft, in my experience. So you need at least 50 pieces of Dawnhide to craft it 25 times... Make it 60 to be safe, if for some reason a crafting or two doesn't give skill points.
That's only to make it to lvl 50 in Leatherworking. If you're lucky enough to get that many Dawnhides on a character before you die of old age, you'll have to exclusively Extract Leather from pretty much everything you have to gather the leather you'll need to start crafting actual items from then on.
On top of that, the prices for some of the vendor bought items for crafting are kind of ridiculous for low level crafting in general.
The system needs to be overhauled a bit. :/
I agree with either adding a Gather Leather skill, same as Gather Essence or Plants, that can be used on applicable beast type creatures, or upping the drop rate. Right now across 4 toons, I think I've looted about....6 total. One is lvl 20, the others are 8-13ish. x__x
I don't normally do this
Leatherworking is broken, Unless you got some sort of official word for what is coming over the horizon... Bump to the max.
Do they still have the skill quests on the boards? it's expensive, but no mats needed to grind for to get from 1-50. You get enough of a supplied mat, and buy the other half (that gets expensive until you get up in level, but the idea is to be able to level up skills without grinding for mats), and you can essentially powerlevel your crafting.
I have not played a leather crafter, so i don't know for sure, but can't you extract leather from items like other extractions?
You're just not fighting the right mobs.
I'll double back later and check, but I've got a good size stash (well, good size being 50 - 70) of dawnhide from VoT and celestial hill mobs.
They drop pretty regularly (still low in comparison to others) in the right areas, and with certain mobs.
They don't seem to drop very often at all in the Fey Forest.
I'll start writing down mobs I notice dropping them semi often.
I had the same experience - gathering Dawnhide seems much more difficult than other initial materials. I already had more ore than I knew what to do with after finishing the starting area alone - just from gathering whatever happened to be in my way - but at level 20 I barely have any dawnhide.
It should drop regularly from all mobs from which it would make sense to drop (i.e. animals), not just from a few "in the right areas."
