Question regarding Masterwork Enchanting

So I've been getting closer to the level cap and have seen more and more about "Masterwork" items through LFG chat and fodder. I tried googling it and couldn't find a straight answer as to what it is and how to achieve it. I understand that masterwork allows you to enchant an item to +12, but my question is this,

Is a masterwork item an extremely rare drop? In essence just an enigmatic item with the ability to achieve a higher enchanting level. Or is it a process that must be done to take an enigmatic item and make it a masterwork item?

Thank you very much.

a Master work item is a "rare" enchant bonus that only comes from using the 52g ID scrolls it adds an extra 3 levels

In addition to adding an extra 3 levels of enchanting, it raises the base stats and increases the values of the green random bonuses it currently has. (i.e. +6% damage to enraged becomes +7%, or something like that.)

At least from what I saw from an unenchanted Masterwork item.

Somewhat right.

You need a Master Enigmatic Scroll, use it on the item you want to masterwork, and then use the Intricate ID scroll in the general shops (the 52g one as stated above).

It will have a slim chance of becoming masterwork, allowing the item to be upgraded to +12 instead of +9, and the 10/11/12 bonuses for it will be the same. Weapons get extra power, armor gets extra endurance.

You have to MAKE an item into a masterwork item. It costs lots and lots and lots of gold and grinding. You have to use "intricate" enigmatic and identification scrolls to convert an item into masterwork, which are drops from endgame bosses and IIRC are also purchasable from one of the faction shops. And even then it's completely up to chance how many of the scrolls you go through to get what you're after.

Also somewhat right.

You do not need a Master Enigmatic Scroll, it only increases the chance of getting the gold "?" on the item, indicating the item has a chance(?) to go Masterwork when identified with the Intricate ID scroll. In addition, I've heard of people using regular scrolls for ID and got Masterwork.

That is completely incorrect.

It does not take much gold or grinding.

Intricate ID scrolls are not necessarily drops. They are bought off General Merchants.

Yeah I know about the intricate ID scrolls being on merchants, I was referring to the intricate enigmatic scrolls. I have gotten only one from a boss and have seen a total of 3 of them drop in all the instance runs I've done. I do recall seeing them on one of the faction vendors somewhere (can't recall which one) but that would also require a whole lot of grinding to get the faction credits to buy them.

You mean master scrolls. The blue ones. I'm pretty sure both of the green (intricate) scrolls, identification and enigmatic, are on the merchant.

One other rather important detail here is that most equipment in the game CANNOT be masterworked at all no matter what you do. If you look at the bottom of the stat window for your gear, most of it will have red text that says something along the lines of "This item cannot be Masterworked", if that text is on your gear, then you can burn all the scrolls you want on it and it will never become masterworked.

At this time the *only* pieces of gear that can be masterworked (that I know of) is the top level crafted gear (Craft Lv410 gold recipes) and the gear available from the Nexus rep merchant. I have never seen an instance or mob dropped item that can be masterworked.
