Root design flaw with Tera (and MMO's in general)

Class based systems.

In my opinion just about every problem most folks have with Tera and the majority of today's MMO's can be traced back to the developers/product managers continually deciding to go with class based systems.

Just about every class based MMO implements them the same way. You choose your race, gender, and class, then it's either a skill tree type system or an upgrade system like Tera, Vindictus, etc. The overall customization of your character is very limited.

Which leaves you with gear. So naturally gear becomes THE END ALL BE ALL since it's the only real way plays can differentiate themselves from the 8,458 other tanks/healers/dps on the server. Thus the game ends up revolving around grinding gear since there's nothing else you can do with your character at max level. Tack on a kick in the nuts RNG enchantment system and you have Tera where everyone gets bored at endgame and quits.

Which brings us yet again to another aspect of what made Asherons Call so great... a SKILL BASED SYSTEM.

No classes, everyone had the same bank of skills to choose from. No waiting for class X to run a dungeon. Gear was irrelevant compared to how you built your character and how you choose to spend your XP points (on not only skills but attributes!) and specialize your skills. Endgame didn't revolve around grinding gear as there wasn't even a level cap and you could keep pumping XP into your skills and attributes even after you hit the lvl 126 soft cap.

Yes, there are disadvantages to a skill based system but IMO they're worth it compared to classed based systems which have much worse negatives.

Sure, you can argue that skill based systems lead to FOTM builds and gimping your character but I'd counter that FOTM builds still exist in class based systems and you can just as easily gimp your character by picking the wrong tree skill combination or whatever.

Personally I just think class based systems suck because they pigeon hole your entire game to revolving around gear. IMO they are the personification of how the industry has dumbed down the genre so even little 8 year Billy can enjoy WoW by taking away almost all player choice. Instead of giving us the freedom to completely customize our characters to our liking we're given a very linear path of progression and decisions which inevitably leaves us at endgame where everyone is the same except for their gear.... LAAAAME.

The root design flaw of Gran Turismo was focusing solely on cars. I like airplanes.
Gran Turismo is bound to fail. Airplane people can't stand it.
If only they would get that beautiful engine and listen to me and add airplanes, their sales would skyrocket but nooooooo. They stick to that failed formula of cars only! LAAAME!

Yeah that almost applies since Gran Turismo is a MMO and all... /sarcasm

1/10 troll attempt.

Maybe you can understand the message I am trying to convey, maybe you can't. I am not trolling though.

I don't consider this a troll attempt. I consider someone proving a point that if you don't like the damn game, then let us who do enjoy it do so without hearing from you all the time. Just like western players are entitled to easy things, they are also entitled to QQ until their thread gets locked.

The latest game in the series technically is an MMO by definition.

You can be innovative, but there's no guarantee that you'll succeed for being wildly original. I think that was what Pharys meant: playing out of the formula is risky.

I rather class-based systems. I don't want a FPS-theme in an MMO:/ I.E. Have all the guns(Skills) on your character without needing team-mates.

The Irony... lol. You imply he has the freedom to choose to play another game. And you outright state that you wish he would take that choice so you are not forced to read what he has to say... Except... You have the freedom to choose to not read what he has to say.

Going back on topic though. There is some truiith to what he says. I remember when I played Guild Wars 1. Half the fun was getting the right... 8 skills. And learning to synergize them correctly...

True there were always " That awesome build On blablabla.com... and that kick [filtered] rotation... blablabla..." But you have the same thing everywhere.

So in my opinion... Class based systems are not the root cause of fail in MMO's....

The root cause of fail, is putting out a product that is boring and funless. I know ...both repetative AND redundant...

Class based... skill based... whatever based.... if it is fun it doesn't matter....if it is non-fun... it does not matter wheter it IS class based ort skill based... Make the game fun.. and no one really would care about gear...or whether endgame is super-duper awesome...or PvP rewards worthwhile...

When MMO developers make games fun again...MMO players will stop whining....

Will ALL whining stop? No... but that is only because the genre is full of non MMO players trying to enjoy MMO's when they have no clue what makes an MMO good. They believe that getting to level cap...asap... with casual play makes an MMO good. They don't realize that that ...is what is killing our genre... Them.
