Scalable instances and no trinity.

Hey everyone,

Has there ever been talk of scalable instances? They could be one to 6 players in size. It would open the game to more people, reduce the cue and perhaps allow them to turn out content faster. Of course they could elimate the trinity while they were at it, I hear GW2 will not have the trinity and Rift has solo instances designed for when you can't or don't want to group.

I think the company that realizes the potential of this feature will clean house.

The new action combat system on top of the old instance system isn't that big of a break through, although I thoroughly enjoy the combat system.

Personally I'm hoping the nexus events evolve into some form of raid type instance with larger groups.

Sounds to me like you're saying Tera would be better if it were GW2.

What is this "trinity" you're talking about?

Healer, tank, dps would be the only trinity I could think of that would apply here.

If he's looking to break class restrictions he should try secret world.

It apparently doesn't work as great as you would like though.

Yea, GW2 got rid of the tank/heal/dps trinity..... now you have tanks and dps that can heal themselves instead.... yay for innovation. Oh well, I guess they figure no one actually liked playing dedicated heal classes.

You apparently seem to think this game should be GW2. Which, by the way, still has a "trinity" of sorts: It still has a point guy to soak up damage, a point guy to do the mass heals, and the rest of the guys will focus on just damage; there will be "professions" who are better at tanking (Guardian) and others better at mass heals, and this will not change through wishful thinking and Anet overhype.

The trinity has persisted so long because it is effective. One should note however that FFXI didn't have a trinity -- and nor did EQ -- it had a quartet: damage, tank, healer, and support. TERA rolls the support class into the healer class, while also allowing the damage-focused classes to function as support/debuff classes. Thus, it does destabilize the typical MMORPG "trinity" system.

I miss my RDM in XI, was always fun to solo as rdm/nin lol

Getting rid of the trinity is always a novel idea but difficult to put into practice in some way that doesn't suck.

This game's "action combat" does however open the door to some specific cases where if the trinity is broken you can pull it together and do something anyhow. Many cases where you don't have a tank or a healer and the game then becomes an exciting round of "dodge or die" until the BAM is down...

Vindictus didn't have a trinity, and it was actually pretty fun imo. Players had to take care of themselves by dodging/blocking effectively and using potions when necessary. Staff Evie had maybe a heal spell or two, but the bulk of her abilities were dps. You never saw groups waiting around looking for a tank or healer...anything could be done with any mix of classes. It was lovely. I haven't played that in over a year or so, though, so things may have changed.

And like Angrynixon said above me, things in Tera can be done without needing a trinity. Technically you could run some 5-man content with, say, 5 berserkers. They just need to play defensively and be smart enough to right-click when the BAM is about to pound their face.
