Star Wars dev: micro-transactions were the only real way to efficiently monetise an online game"

what does anyone's life style have to do with quality?

My comment was made toward the idiot who suggested the SW devs weren't successful.

I can't understand why "I don't like X game" or "X game didn't sell more copies then WoW" equates to a "Failed game".

SWTOR is one of the most successful MMOs to ever launch. Especially if you only look at US based games.

2 million copies sold is an amazing success.

Ah I see :)

But on the sales = success thing... May I humbly bring up Dragon Age 2. Guess it could be considered Successful, but none of my friends who bought the game think it is.

The reason It's not a success is Because they spent far far far more then what they made, simple.

I've posted this in another thread way back when, but here are some facts about subscribers. My friend works in insurance, he had SquareEnix in his account about 4-5 years ago. He had access to their profits. Back then SE had around 500,000 subscribers. SE's insurer told me that FFXI drew in the most profit, and FFXI actually funded their future products. FFXI was what kept SE alive.

So, not having a million subscribers instantly ='s F2P is absolute bollocks. FFXI is going 100% strong, and have already released an entire year worth of updates for 2012.

lolwut? ffxi did not keep SE alive, 13-2 and deus ex on the other hand did considering SE's recent fiscal flops. their primo sales really did a number on SE's earnings

Or it may be because for a game that is all about "Raise to Power" and take control of your destiny, you do neither.

Or for a game that is supposed about storyline that the story is rather insensible?

Or for a game that had great graphics they recycles 5 dungeon maps for the entire game?

To think things are simple doesn't make it so. Though it does require the ability to look at something from multiple perspectives.

How does a already dead game relate to Tera ?

EN MASSE Already said no Micro Transactions F2P = Pay to Win EMS doesn't Like The model a game doesnt need 10m subs to be successful Final Fantasy 11 Never had that and was successful

Good Lord whats up with these kids wanting everything free. The world doesnt evolve around you Grow up.

Side note

I'd bet my +12 Lance The op doesnt even play Tera.

You really don't have a Clue do you?

First of all "kids" isnt an insult, and using it as such shows your own immaturity.

2nd of All, its a cost per point value.

How much did TERA cost to develope and how much does it cost to maintain vs its income?

These are very real world business model questions.

BioWare didnt want F2P either, but its considering it now.

But a Dead game? Only by reletive standards, Starwars has by far a greater population than TERA.

I suggest you "grow up" and take a look at the real world markets and values instead of taking a potshot in the dark aat someone who knows what theyre talking about.

This isnt opinions, this is market watch.

I'm not going to take Business 101 from someone who spells "reference" - "referance"

It's not even a typo -pretty hard to hit a, when you are aiming for e. Just a sign of someone that has an education at or around the 6th grade level.

Just sayin.

I hope everyone here understands unlike WoW, ToR, Rift.

This game is pretty meh if they can't deliver content faster then Ktera launching only 2 dungeons over a years time.it will surely die before 2013.

Good.

I prefer PvP to PVE. I hope they only release new dungeons / gear once a year. More time killing less time noobing it up in PVE.

Come on guy. Being someone who enjoys both PVP and PVE equally, I can say your opinion on what is harder is exactly that: YOUR OPINION. You even said "I prefer," to turn around and say PVE is noobing it up.

We all paid for the content (small it may be) and there is nothing "noobish" about using what you pay for. Personally, I don't touch PVP on any game until endgame. Got to have something to do between raids. I do, however, enjoy the PVP and PVE on most games equally.

PVP more difficult than PVE? Hardly. PVP requires different skills? Yes.

Anyone aware of EA/Bioware, would also note that in no way shape or form, would EA begin giving SWTOR away for free. Even their 'Extended Cut' DLC for Mass Effect 3, was initially going to cost money, and the only reason they changed their mind, was because of all the negative press they received.

The OP MAY BE CORRECT, in a roundabout way. Bioware will likely be adding micro-transactions, just not with the full free to play part. It will have a free to play til level 15, option though.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ea-showcase-games-e3-143015708.html

"As anticipated, EA is opening up its portfolio for free gamers. According to a recent news feed from Reuters, EA is planning to offer at least 15 levels (from July) of its magnum opus, Star Wars: Old Republic for free to play. The company expects that this free offering will boost its dwindling subscriber base going forward. EA lost approximately 400K subscribers in the fiscal fourth quarter. EA expects to earn significant revenue from additional features and through micro-transactions by selling in-game based items."

Did I ever say that my opinion was the only one that mattered? I was simply stating that I prefer PvP to PVE.

I'm just making the person take note that a company's failure to produce fresh PVE content / add levels every 15 minutes isn't something that everyone cares about.

Some people enjoy the time time in between content releases because it gives us time to focus on PVP. IMO, the longer the game goes without any PVE grinding, the better.

Yes, that's my opinion*. That doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way as me. But to assume that a game's PVE content is the sole important feature for everyone, and grinding PVE all day against mundane AI is what everyone craves, is laughable at best.
