Luckily for me I think Tera strikes a good balance with its challange and grind. In other mmos there was no pve content I liked. It was all boring as [filtered] to me. I wouldn't even be playing these things if I hadn't stumbled into the rvr lakes in WAR.
I can't stand mindless, repetitive, tedious grinding that rewards players for just putting in the most possible time, with no regard for real skill, quality or fun. Grinding is only challenging because it's so boring it is hard to do without falling asleep. Sure a little time factor can enhance story, sense of progression, learning, etc but it should not go so far as to become boring like most MMOs. For those saying that grinding is the only way to maintain players that is as insulting as having us chase a carrot on a stick. You spend a lot of $ and time being board only motivated by the false hope it will get better.
Real challenge is being confronted with situations you might loose unless you perform well. Maybe you loose a couple times & experiment with different strategies and then come up with something that works. Players should be able to use logic & creativity to come up with unique solutions. So far up to level 20 I have not encountered anything challenging with PVE but I hear BAMs get better later on & there is always PVP.
Tera is advertising that it is a new breed, an "Action MMO" based on real skill, I hope it delivers. There are enough typical MMOs out there. So far I find it fun but hope it gets more interesting in higher levels and that there are more varied things to do.
Making things "Grindy" is just a poor substitute for actually making content hard.
Real hardcore players want a challenge. Not repetition. Any child with no job living in his mom's basement can do "Tedious" grinding. But not everyone can handle "Hard content".
I think Tera so far has the right idea. Make fighting skill based, fun and innovative, while keeping the tedious boring grinding to a minimum.
Also, the fact that many games don't offer extremely hard PVE content, caused many of us senior players to get addicted to PVP. Devs might fall short of making PVE content that's difficult, but there are always challenges in real players. Humans can be unpredictable, adaptive, and skillful. Many of us see the true challenge in games comes from other humans, not scripted bots. So I normally won't consider playing a game unless it has a serious PVP system.
In any case, most people who talk about challenge are speaking from almost zero experience, most of which never even played EQ. So I take what others have to say very lightly, as chances are they are just kids who think WoW was "Hard" lol.
