TERA's community

I'll admit, this thread is somewhat aimed toward the internet in general, but the issue definitely seems to be highly concentrated on TERA, namely on PvP servers.

Ok, so I know that there have always been what we call "bads" on MMO's and well, lets face it, all online games. But on TERA specifically, mostly on the PvP servers, I have noticed a massive abundance of callous, angry trolls with a chip on their shoulder you can see coming for miles. If only I could count the number of times I heard the phrase in area chat "umadbrah" or "whymad" or "so mad so sad" and the list goes on and on and on.

What I am basically asking is, when did people get so angry and vindictive on the inside? Do people truly get off knowing that they are sucking the positive energy and vibes from someone? Is it because they were treated badly in their own lives and want to lash out on everyone because its "everyone else's fault"?

I realize they're operating under the guise that the one they're speaking with is actually the one who is allegedly angry, but we all know that this attitude is completely transparent. I'm wondering if this is a problem with society itself, TERA, the youngest gaming generation, or just an issue that comes up on the internet when you put a bunch of "bads" in one place.

I seriously doubt that one of these people would walk into a public establishment, knock the food out of a waiters hand and say "UMADBRAH". It is truly intriguing to see the way people act when they are safe behind a computer screen, I mean we are all aware of that. But honestly, like I said, it seems like this whole issue has been taken to a new level.

The ability to do whatever you want and get away with it brings out the worst in people. PvP just escalates things; you're pitting two people against each other, so it's unfortunately natural for them to become hostile. Competition combined with anonymity is a dangerous mixture.

Not to say there aren't good people on the PvP servers; there are plenty. It's just that when you look back on your day, what sticks out is not the good, but the bad. When was the last time you went, "Man, today was an okay day"? Compare it to the last time you thought, "Man, today was an awful day."

I blame the 4chan "culture" that swarmed TERA during these betas.
Sad people trying to abuse their "power" of anonymity. People who confuse being idiots / pests / jerks with trolling.

This kind of behavior really only sparked up as soon as the beta was announced, so hopefully the loud, annoying crowd is just a bunch of freeloaders and will be gone by the time release comes around, and we'll be left with the mature pre-CPE-like group.

From what I remember the first MMO I played I never had this problem. Ultima Online: Renaissance, when it was first released. From my experience, every single MMO game or forum since that time has been littered with this type of personality Azalion speaks of. I've kept to myself a lot in the later MMOs just to avoid that type of person. Sort of growing tired of going out of my way for them.

It is somewhat saddening that the ability to be such a jerk exists inside of people and all it takes is anonymity to be brought out. But hey, that's life I suppose. But yeah, I suppose TERA will have its good and bad days for everyone.

Ah, see I am not familiar with the 4chan culture. I definitely figured though that my ultimate decision about the community should come after launch. I came across a very mature guild of people who wanted only a fair fight. I got along with them very well. So there is hope!

I blame the Publisher EME for trying to take advantage of people. Yeah all those sad people tired of being abused by a publisher that is running a cash grab scam program identical to the one NCSoft pulled with Aion.

They come around here with their sadness and hurting butts. We scoff at them for not supporting this greedy publisher EME in their quest to anally probe western MMO market with yet another "Westernization scam" (did I mention these are the exact same people who botched Aion?)

Yeah what a bunch of pathetic losers they are for not just forking over money to a greedy publisher on the basis of a news blog published on the internet...

Are there going to be GM's in the game to keep this kind of behavior from being so bad? A friend of mine was surprised when he came onto Valley of Titans. He said the PvE server had a nicer, helpful community in comparison lol

I turned my Area chat off just because of how annoying it was x_x

I don't feel like it's a more serious problem in TERA than in any other game in the genre. A big part of it is that every new game coming out is drawing from the same pool of increasingly jaded MMO gamers.

I think the main issue is the genre itself. Until we see something -radically- different, you're just going to see people get even more angry. If you intend on sticking around for more than a few months the biggest whiners do leave and the community more or less stabilizes though. The vast majority of players are going to keep moving on looking for the next big thing, too bad nothing in the pipe even remotely fits the bill.

LOL En Masse? Play their own game? Not in this century. They still don't to this day.

That already says enough about the game they're maintaining. They don't play with out community because they're aware of how bad it is. Let alone the own game they're developing does not bode well with what they want but they like the money.

Actually, I kind of forgot about how jaded MMO gamers are in general. I suppose it's a snowball effect and it has really gained momentum. I am sure I will still be there, well after the server stabilizes. I take pride in being part of making the servers better. Just hearing the responses here prove to me that some people agree, and there are decent people out there.
