I'll admit, this thread is somewhat aimed toward the internet in general, but the issue definitely seems to be highly concentrated on TERA, namely on PvP servers.

Ok, so I know that there have always been what we call "bads" on MMO's and well, lets face it, all online games. But on TERA specifically, mostly on the PvP servers, I have noticed a massive abundance of callous, angry trolls with a chip on their shoulder you can see coming for miles. If only I could count the number of times I heard the phrase in area chat "umadbrah" or "whymad" or "so mad so sad" and the list goes on and on and on.

What I am basically asking is, when did people get so angry and vindictive on the inside? Do people truly get off knowing that they are sucking the positive energy and vibes from someone? Is it because they were treated badly in their own lives and want to lash out on everyone because its "everyone else's fault"?

I realize they're operating under the guise that the one they're speaking with is actually the one who is allegedly angry, but we all know that this attitude is completely transparent. I'm wondering if this is a problem with society itself, TERA, the youngest gaming generation, or just an issue that comes up on the internet when you put a bunch of "bads" in one place.

I seriously doubt that one of these people would walk into a public establishment, knock the food out of a waiters hand and say "UMADBRAH". It is truly intriguing to see the way people act when they are safe behind a computer screen, I mean we are all aware of that. But honestly, like I said, it seems like this whole issue has been taken to a new level.

This isn't Tera's community.

You won't see Tera's ACTUAL community until the game is launched and we know who will stay and who was here to troll.

The problem with "seeding' communities (which is what game designers call it) is that what grows eventually depends on what seeds were planted.

I can see EM not giving two shizzes about CBT: let everything fly, see what works and doesn't.

But on OBT I really hope to see some real policing. Not just for the usual troll/ganking BS that goes on (believe it or not PKs or player killers are necessary for healthy player mix overall) but because of the ticking time bomb that is the Elin race. That will be made a problem by people who really are pedo's or pedo-ish enough (or just A-hole trolls) and by people who "don't get it" because they're ignorant of Asian cultural differences (and can't accept them even after getting schooled, the surest sign of a small mind).

Here's an example. For the most recent CBT on one server is a guild called Elin Cream Pie. This is the kind of thing I hope will be policed on OBT and live. The quality of the seed community determines the quality of the live community. A certain amount of raciness and sexiness (especially in a game with such gorgeous and scantily-clad women characters in it) is to be expected for names, but I feel there should be a line and crass and pornographic names are crossing that line.

Same thing if area chat in OBT/live is anything like it was in CBT.

Yes, you can block people. Yes, you can change channels. Yes, you can report people (and we'll see just how effective THAT is). That's one way to look at it.

Another way to look at it that's equally valid is that if too many players feel like they have to do these things in order to enjoy the game, then EM has failed and we as members of this community have also failed by not speaking up enough about it. Players can do these things, it's true, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD have to. Talk about one bad apple spoiling the entire barrel!

EM needs to make money, and allowing the game experience to become so unpleasant for players they feel forced to jump through all these hoops just so a very few @sshats can get away with whatever gives them lulz is bad business.

Here's to hoping that doesn't happen.

Very well said, I also hope there is more policing going on in OB and release.

What a gem.

Then again, with people like Thaid around, I wonder if we have too little policing of threads here. So far all I have really seen locked are the endless Elin pantsu threads.

I just love the people that do these things and can't put together a coherent sentence without utilizing "textspeech".

It's a sign of the inherent laziness in most people that can't take the time to type out the few letters that it requires to take a "U" and make it "you", or a "UR" and make it into "your" or "you're".

With the advent of technology and the ability to send messages instantly between individuals and groups, you would think that it would add to the collective intelligence of humanity, but instead it seems to suck the intelligence and common sense out of them.

As to the angry nature of people. I will refer you to this: http://www.prisonexp.org/

It shows that when people have power and the ability to remain anonymous, they will often become sadistic and very irrational in their overall thinking. While I am trying to avoid making a generalized or blanket statement, it remains that the anonymity that the internet provides to people, especially in a game that has PvP, many individuals seem to allow their aggressive nature to take hold - and they will go out of their way to ruin another players enjoyment of the game for their own twisted pleasure.

I was a guide in EQ1 for a long time, assigned to the Zek servers (PvP) and saw it regularly there, where people would specifically go to the starting zones and attack players much lower than they were for the sick and twisted pleasure it gave their sadistic minds. I've warned, temp banned and even perma banned quite a few people for ignoring warnings about griefing.

Overall, what it comes down to is that people (in general) are capable of being sick, twisted and very sadistic if they aren't held to a higher standard. The fact that many people tell those that complain about the griefing or ganking that happens on a PvP server "go to a PvE server", or "QQ more" only further proves my point. The fact is, a true player VERSUS player environment would preclude ganking/griefing, merely by definition.

Versus (ˈvɜːsəs) - prep
1. v , vs (esp in a competition or lawsuit) against; in opposition to
2. as opposed to; in contrast with

Ganking and griefing, while are classified in some of the definition, "against; in opposition to", they go completely against the part pertaining to "in a competition", because there is no competition when someone that either vastly outlevels or outgears another attacks them. In those cases, there is no competition, it is merely the higher level or better geared player targeting someone they know they can beat with no difficulty. In the real world, this is called "Bullying".

Bully [bool-ee] - 1. a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people.

Having a system in place that provides a way of punishing individuals that consistently gank or grief other players is necessary to promote the enjoyment of the game for everyone.

I am a firm believer in the community policing itself when it comes to these types of individuals. Instead of high-fiving them and giving them accolades for being able to kill others that are much lower level or lesser geared than they are, ostracize them from the majority of the community and make them feel unwelcome. Do this to enough of them, they will stop, or quit playing because it's become too much of a bother.

Just my thoughts.

There's a very simple solution, if the person griefs you non stop, like even if you switch channels, him and/or his ragtag band follows you and continues to grief you and on top of which insults you. Report for harassment, it's a bannable offense.

I'm not really understanding the point of that, are you saying no moderation or "policing" is good because the evil corporation is brainwashing us otherwise?

Where is that mind blown meme picture... AH! Here it is!

Of course if I misunderstood your point, feel free to dismiss it entirely.
