Tera = Grind? Stop racing to 60, read the story!

Really it comes down to what you enjoy. I've done the rush to level cap game in WoW. I quite literally had a friend end up in the hospital because he has a weak heart and doctors told him "no long, stressful activities". He rushed to the level cap, collapsed at the keyboard and ended up taking a forced month break from gaming.

But if you aren't going to be hurt by it and like the rush of the rush, then go for it.

I chose a different path in Tera. I'm warrior tanking and so far I've tanked every BAM in ever instance through SA. GL is next. Is that slow compared to the rushers? Yes. But it's something I can say I did that is impossible to accomplish once you are level capped. Going back into BoL at level 60 isn't exactly a challenge.

It's taking a lot longer because PUGs and guildies both are saying "we have a lancer, just DPS, go go go!" No thanks. Warrior tanking is suppose to be a challenge? Challenge accepted. It is clearly not the most efficient way to 60.

Neither way is better. I do think one of the OP's points is spot on though. You chose to play a game like you want but you have to accept the consequences of your choices. I want to tank everything, including all BAM quests. The consequence is I (clearly) wasn't first to 60. You choose to rush to 60? Excellent. But the consequence is that the game will feel grindy and you may soon feel there's a lack of end game content.

No.... I'm sorry just no. I'm an avid reader. I started this game reading the quests, and realized after a while that it was just slowing me down and incredibly boring. I've stopped doing that and only read the quest info for the storyline quests and even that I skim. There's not much to it really. Very cookie cutter and dull.

People rush to end game content, because the productivity of wasting time getting gear or farming items at low level is nothing compared to the time you spend doing those things at max level. If they enjoy rushing and getting to max level, why do they need to be told by people that don't that how they're playing the game is wrong? It's not wrong it's just different.

I enjoy maximizing my productivity in a game. That's why I play games. It's why I rush. Early levels are not productive for my chosen goal and that's perfectly fine. There are certain things in life that are definitely worth it to me to slow down and savor and enjoy. Low level MMORPG playing is not one of them. If you enjoy it that's fine, but if I had a nickel for every time I have had people in MMOs say that everyone should slow down and savor it... well then I'd have some nickels. :P
It must suck to be you. :\

No way you're an avid reader if you don't enjoy this storyline...

It's like this... what would you rather spend your time doing... reading a well-written story in a medium (aka novels) best suited to great storytelling by authors that are masters of their craft or a fragmented, disjointed simplistic thought out story by people who are at best mediocre in the field of storytelling and quite possible have never written a novel in their life. I'm getting off Tera early tonight to go continue reading a great piece of fiction tonight... and this is the way I see it.

Now if other people enjoy the story that's fine. That's called opinions. I won't understand that opinion, but I at least admit there's no objective arguing it. The problem I have is this growing movement of people crying out with "Don't do what you do to enjoy the game! Do what I do to enjoy the game!" Whatever, it's not a more sophisticated gamer that sits there and reads all those quests. Just an OCD one.

It's nice to see a post like this. So many people complain there's no story in this game and all I see is story. There's a main story and each camp and zone has their own story. I wouldn't say that is this game's best feature though. Still, I can understand why some people rush to 60. Just like how you (and I) enjoy story, others don't and prefer rushing through. MMOs attract a lot of different types of gamers.

I posted the pictures of the writers for this game on page one! They have a great history of novels and other video games! Way to demean the creators of this game! You may as well just go read your novel and stop playing if you're going to spit on them like that!

I AM an extrememly avid reader. Last year alone I read something like 100 novels on my nook by new and old authors.

I have not read a single quest in Tera yet.

Why?

Because I dont have that much time to play, and getting to see amazingly beautiful new zones, cool new monsters and the next awesome dungeon is way more interesting at the moment then reading walls of text.

When I am done with my main, I will roll an alt and I will have the patience to read the story quests because I will already know monster wise what to expect as I progress.

I am having a blast. Leveling up for the next dungeon and getting the best gear I can before I go in and before I stop running it is fun for me.

I appreciate the fact that you enjoy the story OP and its cool that you are trying to encourage others to do the same, but the fact is that everyone needs to do / play the game in the way that is the most fun for them.

If I had a ton of time on my hands I would spend all day every day questing and reading and it wouldnt matter but seeing that I dont I had to make a choice. I would rather play the game then read the game and there is nothing wrong with me or anyone else like me that does the same.

So you'd rather play and rush through the game than enjoy the game, read the quests, and comprehend the story? What a dull life...

Staying at home and spending your entire day reading MMORPG quest dialogue.

I'm not going to say it's dull because I'm sure some people enjoy reading.

It's not "rushing" through the game, but rather, they want to enjoy the -other- aspects of the game. Story is simply but one of the aspects that can compose a game, and one does not have to take in everything at once.

I prefer to enjoy my music by focusing on certain instruments at a time, and other times, focusing on the entire piece as a whole. Because I focus on the details of the tympani, does that mean I spit on the face of the violinist? And I doubt you can recognize every note of every instrument through a single playthrough, so does that mean you spit on everybody's face by not devoting the attention that each performer deserves? It's the same concept.

While you do have a point that the game has a good story that can very well be enjoyed, your point loses meaning in saying that, "You're a horrible person if you dont read it the first time through". Almost hypocritical, even.

I want to share a few words. When I first joined WoW, I started off by reading all the quest text. Once I started out leveling each zone I ended up skipping half the quests and not caring anymore. I then rushed all the way to max level and felt like I got nothing out of the leveling experience. WoW has so much lure and many zones with their own interesting story, yet even being a player for 3 years I know about 1% of it because I never read anything.

When I started Tera I made sure I took my time, read every single quest and even the opening paragraphs that each NPC says. Sure leveling is taking me twice as long but I spend $80 on the game and plan on spending $15 a month so I would like to take my time and enjoy the adventure. Now I'm satisfied because I understand what it going on at each base camp, the story of each zone so far, and why I am killing or gathering what. I can imagine this game would be VERY boring if you're rushing through each of the million quests and not reading any of it. It would be like playing a game like Skyrim for example with the sound off (so you can't hear NPCs talk) and never reading a single thing an NPC tells you to do. You'd be running around just killing stuff with zero story behind anything.

I'm loving the story line of Tera more than I enjoy the stories in single player console RPGs. Makes you feel like your character is really a hero and making a difference in the world
