The Great Questing Conundrum

So i didn't follow this game much at all. Looked at the races and instantly thought Korean grindfest. That being said im quite pleased on how pleasant the beta was. I only lvl up to 16 but The combat was fluid, the mechanics good, itemization a little bland in appearance but great stat customization. Felt Aion-ish but in a good way. Graphics superb, but when it came to questing...well lest just say they didn't bother dolling it up for you. It was a straight kill X gather Y scenario.

The argument being, "well its the same in all MMO's". This is true, but every mmo trys to make it engaging either by story or a twist or a mechanic so they are not a straight just kill it. This is where i think it lacks, thus making it feel worse then other games. In 14 lvls besides story quest all side quest were kill x, maybe a few gather Y (very few). This is no good. So i thought of all they type of quest ive encountered in my mmo gaming experiences:

- Story quest (check) - You did well on this, each zone seems to have is problem where u come in and resolve. (problem -> conflict -> solution)

- Kill x, Gather y (check)- You have too many of these. Mostly cuz there easy to produce

- Dynamic Quest- These are quest that update themselves, completing one objectives leads you to another without ever returning to quest giver.

- Personal/Race Quest - Self explanatory; quest involving your specific race and how they fit into the world

- Class Quest - Quest that teaches you more about your class (maybe unlocks an ability?)

- Instance quest (check) - You have these as well besides dungeons. Good job, but id like to see more variance besides waves of mobs to kill throu.

- Fluff Quest- These are item drops, escort, wanted poster, puzzle solving, click on environment type

- Off the beaten Path quest - these are nearly extinct. But id like them to make a comeback one day. Quest that don't hold your hand. You will have to read the quest and decided where to start your search. (rare)

What do u guys think? are u fine with Kill x questing or more options? Again this is just my view to lvl 16, there might be more of these later on but i haven't seen any thus far.

TLDR: Questing need more variety in order not to get so grindy, give us something to do other than kill X.

Actually, I really like the fact that there is absolutely no need to read any of the quest text. Sometimes I do read it, sometimes I don't.

I play this game because the playing of the game, i.e. the running around killing stuff, gathering stuff, finding stuff, and interacting with other PEOPLE (as opposed to NPC's) is what is fun. Quests really provide nothing more than experience bonuses, money, and items in addition to whatever drops from the aforementioned killing stuff, gathering stuff, finding stuff, and interacting with other PEOPLE types of activities.

If I want a good story, I'll go read a book. If I want a story driven choose-your-own-adventure video game experience, I'll go play a single player RPG game or SWTOR (lol).

This is an MMO. It's meant to be played with other people. NPC quest givers are not people.

I acknowledged this but why not have some of those elements in your game as well? for as u can see we have plenty of threads of ppl QQing about grindy questing. So its to them i ask.. what DO u want?

thats the catch 22!! most game focuses on thoes 2 types of questing. Kill x or story and in the end result is this:

"this game has story? lolz" spacebar OR this game is too grindy!!! its all Kill x gather Y. So i wonder... what the heck do u guys want?

I suggested an "off the beaten path" quest system, But suggested it in the form of player competition/Game master creation quests. Where odd things appear throughout the world, and you have to piece the puzzle together to get a huge bonus, and the quest would be so epic that it could take several days to complete. it could have special cut scenes and even be slightly (or highly) Randomized so that people don't just easily make a guide for it and everyone just lines up in droves to find the clues.

A real brain teaser sort of quest.

Yeah the problem with thoes quest are it requires alot of GM time to make even on a monthly bases, Quest where players can interact with GM are always great but rarely happen.

On that not ive always been an advocate at user generated content, Even if its just instancing. now that would be epic.

I could care less about the normal quests, but for the love of god, please make the story missions completely voiced over!

The OP is resolving how many variations of quests are present in the game. Some of the options listed are present, but not acknowledged. The OP may not have encountered them.

There are several examples of dynamic quests in the game, they just happen to be portions of other quest chains which require you to interact with an NPC or object. There are indeed few quests that you get automatically or just through passing a point, and which auto-update or auto-complete. On the Island of Dawn, hitting level 6 gets you the first Elleon quest, while hitting level 11 gets you the "here's a free Horse!" quest. These all have turn ins.

There are several "fluff" quests in the game by the OP's definition, although I'd define this term as any quest that exists outside of the normal level progression, and is thus not necessary for typical leveling-by-questing processes. This would count all repeatable quests, as well as "that object has a quest for me!" types that largely complete on first turn in (none start their own quest chains).

WoW ran the gamut of these quest types, and GW2 intends to use mostly the dynamic system, but the general content of these quests are effectively the same.

There is another style of questing (and one of the most annoying) and that's the NPC-to-NPC quest, where you spend minutes (or hours) essentially running around and collecting entries in your "quests completed" log. A good example in WoW (and one of the best, I think) was "The Missing Diplomat." But there were more. Oh, so many more.

But, the questing in TERA isn't meant to be fluid or engaging, it is meant to auxillary to the experience of levelling. That is, actually reading them (the achievement, "Loremaster," lampshades this). Otherwise, yes: you have kill and gather, with little differentiation.

Personally, I'm fine with the questing. I prefer a bit more story, given a choice, but this is the style of questing I joined the genre with and it's comfortable, like a familiar cup for my cocoa. I won't complain if they spice it up, but neither will I have an issue if it never changes.

My only requirement is that there -are- quests. Grinding...ugh, I hate mindless grinding usually.

I think some grinding in TERA can be good if just for the sake of exporing the zones. If every quest is followed you outlevel content too quickly IMO.

I also hope that BHS/EME going forward adds more depth to the overall questing. As it stands now though you have a few types of quests to get you by (story, side, guild, rep and dungeon). The best we can do is continue to give feedback.
