Why Destroy Low-Pop Servers?

You'd rather chars were forced to stay on a crap population server?

No. But Arachnaea was not always the "crap population server" it is today. At this point, I think it's too late to salvage Arachnaea. I would be happy with a merger, but EME has not been willing to discuss that idea publicly.

Why force a merger when the players can simply move where they want?

Population density and distribution is a huge issue in mmos with distributed server environments. Free Transfers is actually a rather elegant solution to a problem that is entirely dependent on unknown and unpredictable variables. Namely, Player behavior.

You should try and take a step back and think of the overall game population and not just a single server, I think it might help your perspective.

Edited

My perspective is that of someone with a level 60 character who plays regularly and participates actively in a vanarch guild on a server that is not Dragonfall. Someone who showed up for a Nexus that couldn't get past phase two.

Don't worry. I'm not suggesting a merger with your precious RP server.

Uh, you do realise after Battlegrounds come out, with killer T13/14 PvP gear, that Nexus will serve almost no purpose? Short of people who can't fork over the gold/time for crafted T13 there is absolutely no reason to do Nexus now, or in the future. Unless you *really* want a Top Hat...

@Rocdawg

It's kind of obvious what's happening. I think everyone knows the game is hemorrhaging subs / active players. In MMO's a server merge is typically viewed as a failure, that not enough people are playing the game (regardless of how untrue / true that may be).

EME is able to save face by allowing free transfers so people don't complain about being stuck in ghost towns OR having to pay $XX for a transfer to a populated server. Had they charged for transfers my assumption is that more people would have up and quit rather than pay another fee to play the game.

Take a look at the GD forum... the first 3-4 topics have some active chatting between a handful of people, the rest of the threads on the 1st page go 1 or more hours with no reply and maybe 1-2 dozen new topics a day.

Sure forum activity doesn't represent in game activity but there is a relationship they share... hell even FFXIV with it's 15,000 subs has a more active forum. Check any other popular game and the forums move so fast you can't even keep up with the number of topics and replies that are posted every few minutes.

^ +1 to what JP said. If there weren't free transfers, I can guess at the number of angry threads that would have been created already asking for free transfers/mergers due to being locked into 1 server. Right now if someone doesn't like the fact their server is empty.....MOVE.

I thought the Free Transfers were only to the Low (Recommended) populations where it costs 10 dollars to move to medium and high.

This would be better if it were true. You were only not allowed to move to higher population servers when there was a queue issue going on (I believe it was during headstart). A lot of people ended up rolling on low population servers (aside from the people running away from the queue times) to play with friends (who couldn't even create an account on those servers). They then opened the servers again for transfer :/

What I see happening a lot on PvP servers is that people will level, gear up, level crafting, run some vanarchs, zerg some people/guilds (pretty easy when you have the numbers in low pop servers), get bored, and transfer. Others will transfer when they hit cap. I don't think people would quit if there was a charge, but I don't think free transfers are a smart idea. You'll still end up having people who never transfer and budge to keep an extra semi-empty server will dictate it's time to merge it with something.

I think they made an announcement about that for the future but it's not in place for the time being. Even tried to transfer an alt and med/high servers were eligible.

"All servers are available for transfer to and from at this time. Please note you can only transfer from PvP to PvP servers and from PvE to PvE servers. "

Would linking brokers across servers help?
