I always build my own when it comes to my gaming / work machines because I like easy upgrades and don't want to have to worry about running into glitches with proprietary systems - so I started wondering how much truth their is to this giant disparity people claim regarding alienware vs build your own. I built a couple of matching systems - screenshots below because I'm sure the formatting just won't hold up.

In short, with similar hardware the price difference was ~400.00 higher for the alienware. What you get extra on that system is a 1 year over the phone diagnosis and in-home repair warranty, and you don't have to build it yourself. In other words you save about 300.00 by skipping the warranty and 100.00 by building it yourself. I suppose those values could be argued, but even if you split them in half, we're talking about a 200.00 price difference which is barely over 10%.

As for the quality of parts - I believe they are pretty much the same; I used a [filtered] MB as that's what people always say alienware goes with. I also went with a modest 750PSU since I assume alienware skimps a bit there being that they don't give any details on it.

First off
Biostar is garbage, Go with EVGA or Asus or even MSI.

2nd Youre missing the Liquid cooling system that Alienware has inside of every one of its desktops.

3rd Alienware has a few OEM parts inside that system that is controlled with their "Command Center" software.
its called a MIO controller board, and it moderates the lighting systems and the computers power management and other Alienware prorietary. add in the lighitng and it costs about 120$
Where are your custom lighting options? Installed OS based cooling controllers and lighting controllers?

4th Where are you extra casefans?

5th The alienware Aurora case isnt a cheap case. its a Massive and highly detailed case. It has lighting systems and branding built in as well as a graphics card shroud(cage), and is made of hgh grade plastics and steel. its worth about 250$ market price.
The Alienware Area51 case, no longer in production, was worth about... 375$ because it was a full metal tower with lighting and extras.

6th, Alienware offers tech support, for the entire system. and has overnight shipping on RMA and replacement parts. with each part you buy sperately youre going to have to talk to a different techsupport person everytime. and Alienware wont void your warrenty for upgrading, infact they'll help you with it, even if you didnt buy the upgrade from them.

Yes Biostar is garbage - I pointed that out and why I picked it.

Good point with the water cooling and lack of fans - lets say that brings the prices $100.00 closer narrowing the gap to between 0 and 5%.

There's no custom lighting because the proponents of build your own usually call that part of AW builds garbage. To itemize it wouldn't wouldn't help my argument that the cost disparity is minimal (which is the conclusion I came to and still hold).

The case I chose moderately because 1. the psu wasn't included as it seems to be in the AW case and 2. the detailing you pay for is again, is often referred to as garbage. The AW haters generally want something more simple so that's what i chose without picking a beige, $50.00 piece of crap. In short, I chose to remove this as a point of argument against AW.

Regarding support - it's very subjective. The machine I own can't be down for a day without costing me more than any of the parts in it, save the video card, so in my case if something breaks it gets replaced by me with something new immediately and the part I RMA ends up becoming a spare when I receive it in a month or two. Presumably there are others out there that are too scared to open their case and love getting someone who's insured to come to their home and do it for them. To me, at this point it doesn't matter - I think we've established the difference in price is almost zero, even when I'm favoring the home-built system. Following your more strict assessment of value it's either zero or cheaper to get the Alienware.

IOW the conclusion is the same - it's not really any cheaper to build your own system.

1) EVGA and MSI would probbaly add about maybe $20-$40 more than the current board.
There are some boards that have them' TopGrade Alienware wood planks for about
a few bucks short.

2) Cheep Liquid cooling is about $70-$75 with tax and Etc etc.

3) OEM and starndard hardware is already controlled by Motherboard software. I.E
Afterburner etc.

Fan controlers can be bought and customized if you so need one,
even though fan speed can be used in once again, Motherboard Software. Or
you can just dload SpeedFan and overspinyourfanslulz.

Custom lighting options ussualy come with a Case.

4) Fans with LEDs come with Case.

5) .... You havent been looking at OTHER websites that sells computer cases havent you?
=( Also the Reason why Their cases Are Not Cheep is because they Just have you
pay for the Name Brand. ^^;

6) RMA's is handled by each part from each manufactor, Difference? You have a
middle man doing all the work for you.

Customer support is nothing more than a tech that goes through a script to help ID
the issues/fix/RMAs or Just for feed back. See Cheep OverSeas Labor for more
details Via HP/Dell. ^^;

As for upgrading computer parts, Some stores such as CompUSA have some pretty Good
Ideas of what to upgrade with and what NOT. ANd you really dont have to wait for about
a day )high charge for Sh& H(.

As it is, this is more of a BIY Vs DBIFY*

From experince on both ends, Its better that you be VERY FREAKING PRICK-LIKE Picky
from where and how much you buy your computer. Some places just Rip you off or just
pretty much Su**s.

*BIY = Build It Yourself
*DBIFY = Distubtor Builds It For You

They have a variety of support levels and the default appears to detail a year of in-home service, which is different from what you're describing. It starts as you describe but ends with someone bringing hardware to your house to replace whatever is causing the problem. It's worth noting that it's not a 'dell tech' that will show up - it's someone far more generic who probably suffers hygiene issues and has passed whatever certification Dell requires (probably a compliance questionnaire and the purchasing of their tech manuals). The major difference is that you don't have to ship your hardware away, rendering your system unusable for an extended period of time.

its not because they are poor, its because most things used in there is junk, motherboard, ssd, power supply, ram they are no brands its just alienware mass produce them, so its cheaper. only thing alienware use thats know brands are cpu and gpu. only thing i bought there from alienware is my 2x 23"inch 3d monitors.

end the end. if you custom built your pc you have control of what you put inside, so you know its not a cheap peace of crap they used, only thing fancy about alienware is the case imo.
