dps is a thing you do, not something you can be

damage per second is something you can do, just because you do damage does not make you a "DPS."

there is such a thing as burst damage (a la berserker), sustained damage from quick melee attacks (like an archer), and damage over time (like bleeding, poison, etc).

what ever happened to the good old fashioned term "DD" or damage dealer? a berserker is not a dps, casters usually arent either, quit calling me one.

rant over.

WoW happened. That was where I first head DPS used as an adjective/noun instead of a verb.

This has to be the most platitudinous thread ever.

Well, if you look through the forums enough, you'll find that DPS doesn't matter, or that it is in fact not even a thing.

Seriously, joking aside, what is with this semantic bull[filtered] plaguing this place... seriously exsanguinates the community of any meaningful discussion that could be had when people are content arguing over ridiculous terms like this.

Use the term DD. DPS is a measurement that you cannot actually measure in TERA.

my rant is legitimate. it makes no sense to call my berserker a "dps" when my damage isnt coming from auto attacks.

When I switched from Lineage 2 to WoW I had no clue why people used the term "DPS" as a noun.

I had to adapt unfortunately. I give others the benefit of the doubt, assuming they followed my same route.

tis true, damage dealer is a more workable term in this game than dps. you can thank the wow tards and point, click, faceroll skill mmo's and dps parsers for dps usage in reference to DD's. any and every class has dps of some sort, not every class is a DD though. lancers have dps, doesn't make them a dd, priests have dps, once again, doesn't make them a dd.

dps is something every class has. which makes it an imprecise term at best. but dealing with the hive mind of typical mmoer...it's all they understand. peers use it, their parsers use it...so instead of thinking it out why it's an invalid term...they use it.

for funsies i'll join a group on a non-dd toon when i see one shouting for a dps ^_^ when they ask why i joined and they say 'you're not a dps' i say but i am, i can put out some damage per second...maybe you were wanting a damage dealer instead?

but once again...it's the hive mind. they see dps all the time...so blindly use it when what they actually mean is damage dealer.
