The first number of nvidias code name is the gpu model and architecture
> X00

The second number is the line of succession is how much is essentially "loaded" onto it.
> 0X0

I forget what the third slot is (probably nothing seeing as they don't really use it"
>00X

And that concludes their GeForce reasoning.
the Quads are different (8800, etc)

But yes a 460 is better than a 550. The 550 is just a 450 with whichever they decided to add on to the gpu, like better physX or a few more cores depending on the GPU structure.

Even though everything is running faster and with less heat on the 550 and 560? Interesting...

Get a GTX 560 Ti, normal versions r really cheap, but a good overclocked one is still cheap compared to bigger cards and can go for about £200 (in the UK that is). I personaly use a Gygabyte Nividia GTX 560 TI Super OC Edition, cost £220.

Maybe i need to learn a little something something then... I though faster and cooler = better... *My bad* Lmao.

Look at the specs. The memory bandwidth isn't the only thing better than the 460... both the 550 Ti and 560 Ti are better in EVERY WAY than the 460... GPU speed, Shader Clock speed, Memory speed. Just faster. And if you were to dig deeper into it you'd find (Like i did) that the normal temp for a 460 to run is around 55-60 degrees celcius. The 550 and 560 Ti's are closer to 40-50 degrees celcius. (Mainly because the 460 also requires more power than the 550 or 560 AND the fans built into the 550 and 560 were upgrades from the ones mounted on the 460)

How about you do your homework and read up on basic theory behind how GPUs are made. Then you might actually understand what specs mean. It's not like Oh ho this manufactuerer has listed 8 out of 11 specs for this card is better than other card, so this first card is better. Yea.... no.

460 has 336:56:24 cores clocked at 778MHz stock
550 Ti has 192:32:24 at 900MHz stock

That is all. that. needs. to. be. said.

i'm going to play through the betas and decide whether to roll 560 Ti or 560 Fermi without the boost.

Kind of on a budget now after the CPU mobo ram and psu i upgraded.

I had dual SLI'd 460 FTW editions and suped up to the 560 Ti 448 core Classifieds... I know they run a TON cooler (My whole case stays a minimum of 5 degrees celcius cooler while gaming)... Of course, with 5 fans at 120mm-200mm, it doesn't get hot anyways...

I get the cores. But do they actually run separately from one another? Because i was under the assumption that they ran together to make XXXMHz...? (Which would be where i got off track at)

The classifieds have that nice 448 cores, so sexy with the 320-bit width <3
