As for evidence of a playerbase being a credible source of information I'll point you to the FFXI wiki , really any player made wiki for any MMO that is stuffed with useful information.
But no, you are right, the people playing the game have no idea what is going on with the game they are playing.

that's a beyond stupid analogy considering any of the information on there can be .DAT mined or reverse engineered through thorough testing. mechanics can be calculated, populations cannot be found out through either of those.
