These are all secondary issues derived off of something necessary: having the ability to realistically measure your damage output.
What people do as a result of dps meter competitiveness is immaterial, these are people you decided to group with, and a form of measurement is critical unless you intend to do a lot of excel spreadsheet theorycrafting which may or may not be entirely accurate.

This statement pretty much overrides any of the line of thinking that some dps who would stand in fire for more time on the boss should ruin it for everyone competent. Making a semi-serious group shouldn't be guesswork when it comes to dps.
You can SEE if a dps is being overly risky in order to bloat their dps by either talking with the healer or observing them dieing consistently. You cannot realistically SEE a 20% difference in dps between 2 or 3 members out of a 5 member party without a dps meter.

Being a good tank is tough and it is very easy to see if a tank is bad.
Being a good healer is tough and it is very easy to see if a healer is bad.
Being a DPS with no DPS meter is a safe haven for bad players - let them have something.
