PvP vs PvE

Greetings Tera Community ~

My friend decided to devilishly hype me up on this game, then a few days later said to me, "BTW, I'm playing on a PvE server because I hate being ganked." Given that he should have known that I am a PvPer @ heart - he probably could have spared me the hype (I haven't played an MMO in about 3 years at this point, so it wasn't like I am actively looking to play in the first place - my first was L2, second was WoW, then AoC -- best PvP evar).

I am presented with the obvious scenarios. Roll PvP by myself (very unlikely), Roll PvE, convince my friend to roll PvP, or simply not play.

Can anyone elaborate how the PvP system has been in terms of ganking? Has there been tons of unnecessary slaughter by random groups looking giggles?

Likewise, how 'lame' or unlame are PvE servers?

I've read and understand the 'outlaw' concept, but it seems like the possibility is there for level 50+ to just stomp on level 12s if they wanted to.

I:

Want to try this game.
Would roll PvE if PvP is not vastly different (besides the whole, gank anyone anyone; will there be area's for mass PvP outside of battlegrounds? Much like Castles in L2?)
Would preferably convince my friend that 'its not that bad'.

Many thanks~

On PvP servers, there is the possibility that higher-level players can gank you, but they don't gain anything from doing so. If you get ganked, you can switch channels to get away from them. If you play with a group of people, you probably won't get ganked unless you're at war with another guild.

As for OW PvP areas, there haven't been any in the CBTs so far, but there's supposed to be some different things like that either at launch or shortly after.

Thanks for the response Kellexx.

It seems that we're both too adamant about the server we are playing on, which really means that I won't be playing -- Oh well.

I hope the game is a great success and fun for everyone!

On PvE servers, we currently have duels and deathmatches (consensual team PvP match) in the world. We are currently working on guild vs. guild on PvE servers as well. :)

Honestly, it's very easy to save yourself from a gank. Once someone flags, their name turns red. All you have to do is switch channels before they attack you, or go to a safe zone (camp / town / city) and switch or wait for them to leave. Most of the quest hubs are safe zones (no PvP at all).

Even when I quested by myself, I only got attacked like once or twice (not including GvG) throughout all of CBT2. To abandon a game because of such a small factor would seem silly, but whatever.

I'm sorry if it was ambiguous, but I am the one who wishes to play on the PvP server - so I am not abandoning it on account that I could be ganked, but because my friend wants to avoid being ranked. He will still play, just on the PvE server. I just won't play 'alone', or on a PvE server because I feel as if my freedoms are more 'restricted' if that makes sense. I always opt for a freer-er world.

Join a guild rolling on a PvP server. You'll make plenty of friends and enjoy the game. Simple.

Thanks for the advice/encouragement.

Those days are behind me unfortunately, lol. It is difficult to find reliably good players as a casual player (forgot to mention that - I would be only playing an hour or two a day). Plus ~ it is not quite the same to play 'alone'. The friend I am referencing is an IRL friend ~ and while I made tons of friends in WoW/L2 (I had no friends in AoC - I spent the majority of level 30 ganking in a town, lol) ~ it is simply not the same, and quite a drama filled road.

I have a question about the guild verse build.
Say the guild i am in does this. Do i still have a choice not to pvp flag? Or is it every one in the 2 waring guilds are open game for being killed?

This could be a make or break for me. On pve servers pvp should never happen with out my consent. Not my guild leaders mine!

I think that is an excellent question Wolfetx.
