Skeptic trying Tera

So I'm one of those "ugh another copy/paste MMO" type guys. But don't get me wrong, I've read up a bit on this one.

My first impressions were "Meh" about Tera. Then I started reading reviews, and it seems no one has much nice things to say and mostly everything I read about this game is negative feedback. From the videos and screens I have seen of gameplay, it looks like the same ol' MMO just with some fancy new combat mechanics. Still doing boring quests (grind x amount of mobs a billion times), nothing dynamic or ground breaking, heavy grind like traditional F2P games, inane leveling curve, split community between PvP and PvE, gear "progression" (grind), etc etc. I mean, I even saw a screenshot of people waiting in line for a quest boss to respawn so they could all get their turn at finishing a quest. I mean, really? Even to the point of hearing that they stole half their material and content from another company that they used to work for.

My first thought of this game was "another same ol' boring MMO like the others". I've played UO, EQ, WoW, Rift, SW:TOR, GW, even Perfect/Forsaken World and many other F2P games. All the same thing, with tiny changes here and there that don't make a big difference. They are all still the same thing, with nothing new added or nothing ground breaking.

Me personally, I'm in line waiting for GW2. But today I checked my email and got invited to join in the Open Beta coming this month. After all the negative reviews, and from watching videos that didn't impress me, I was hesitant to check this game out.

But I stopped and thought to myself. "Maybe it's time to make my own assumptions of this game instead of just going off what everyone else is telling me about it".

So I'm going to give it a try. Watching videos and reading reviews doesn't get me the full idea of what this game is truly about until I play it for myself right?

So here's hoping that the game proves me wrong and steers me in the direction of wanting to buy it. Wish me luck and thanks for reading.

Well be sure to post again after you try it. I am still trying to decide if I want to do the character creation tomorrow. They will reserve a name on the 13th, but you have to preorder game on the Tera site.

one generally only sees negative feedback on the forums, because most ppl only post if they think something needs to be changed. ive played during every closed beta event, and this game is probably the most fun ive had in an mmo for a while. im looking forward to the changes being put in the game for the open beta

Can you try to explain the movement issues for casters. I don't understand it.

Temp theres no real movement issues with casters. What it is, is if you cast a spell you can't be running while casting, you are locked in the animation of casting until it finishes then you can move again. This isn't a bug or a problem its how the game was designed and is the same for all classes. When you use a move you commit to that move and are locked in the animation of that move until it finishes.

Ty for the response. I just posted a thread about 3rd person view. Can u address that please. I have never played 3rd person. I tried the trial version of Darkfall and it was a nightmare, but I didnt' give it much of a chance.

this is working as intended, and it is the same for every class... think of the animations as cast timers. essentially, this is how combat is balanced... when you choose to use an ability, you are locked into it until the animation is finished, or an animation breaker is cast(like dodge for melee)

it can be annoying at times, but without this, melee would be running around in circles while spamming abilities like rogues do in wow, and casters would never be within melee range.

third person view is the same as most mmos... i gives you a view of your surroundings, as opposed to simply in front of you.

Yeah I understand that you get surround view but what I am asking is how difficult is it to move with. I have always played 1st person and other views in EQ( F9 gives you several views to choose from)

3rd person is a whole different game. The way your character moves is very very different.

it is pretty straightforward... your movement follows the cursor and the 8point direction with wasd.
