I played D2 when it was released on Juno dial up on my parents computers as a kid.
I've played/botted much later for D2 ladders and jsp.
I just went 1-58 to Act 3 hell solo on a Wizard (very mediocre soloer, only above Barb and barely above WD) in 35 hours played, and I'm pretty disappointed. I could pretty much fill out an entire review covering fundamental issues, but I'll summarize in that Blizzards idea of balance makes Bluehole/En Masse look good, which pains me to even say.
The main way to play through the game involves exploiting broken mechanics that are only viable for 3 classes (DH Infinite Invis, Monk Infinite Spirit, 0 vit wizard) and the game STILL ends up feeling boring with frustrating unavoidable 1 shots and monsters that take far too long to die, for almost no real reward (level 60 cap is a joke). Fill this with bad itemization decisions, horrible AH handing, terrible network issues (that's not even including the several hours of downed servers at release with missing achievements and rollbacks, and the big asia issue that spilled over to US forums) and it feels like Blizzard did everything in its power to give the finger to old fans, new players, and everything in between all at once.
I figure I might just pick up a few more pieces of loot of the gold AH, and solo hell up to Act 1 or 2 inferno, then quit before I decide to set up a chest farming bot.
