Have you heard some? (It's a type of music, if you don't know!) Do you like it?

Personally, I fell in love with dubstep a little over a year ago. It's been pretty crazy to see it go from a smaller gathering (I was near the end of that phase) to a rather popular phenomena in music. One of the most interesting (and fantastic, in my opinion) was seeing it's effect on pop music today. I see it making it's way into pop music a fair amount now-a-days.

Not only is the genre changing how pop and other genres music is made, but its booming popularity is having an incredible effect on the genre as a whole. It opened up a lot of people into the DnB style and has started seeing effects of new artists that are bringing new influences into the genre. I love it. I know there's a lot of divided opinions on the newer artists (namely Skrillex) but frankly I think it's nothing but fantastic for the genre as a whole.

What are your opinions? Also, link your one favorite dubstep!

i have mixed feelings on dubstep :/

i mean when im in the mood for it then its amazing. for me the heavy bass lines can draw me in and make me feel like dancing when im simply walking to my next class on campus or something.

one thing ive "hypothesized" (and others im sure, but so far im the only one :P) is that its popular due to the "feeling" of it. i mean listen to it, loudly enough of course, and you can literally feel it in your chest, not only the bass but most everything else due to the low tones it usually uses.

i think thats the reason its popular cause when im not really in the mood for it and i hear it i can pick it apart in my mind and understand that its not really that "good." i mean just about all dubstep is simple, not too many layers, no intricate lines/riffs/etc, and many MANY of the most popular ones even lack a constant rhythm or a defining "path."

now im not saying "dont listen to dubstep cause its bad!" cause its not bad! well in a way. like i said, it creates LITERAL FEELING when listening to it, and thats new, at least to the extent this style of music creates, and thats a break through. i would like to see it become more complex and defining, just so i could listen to it all the time and not when i just need background music or at a dance/party/something, but thats just me.

P.S. and if youre a dubstep fan and start posting your favorite sings that you think are complex dont bother cause our definition of "complex" is most likely different. like i mean complex could either be the guitar work in a John Mayar song, the lyrics and their meanings in a 30 Seconds to Mars song (or another band that places real true life lessons and stories in their songs), or the way TOOL writes their music (basically so intricate and well thought out that different instruments can play on different time signatures and still line up... its insane...). thats how i, and the music industry in general, see "complex."

On my way to Steamboat Springs, CO, for spring break snowboarding last week (was crappy, 60+ degrees every day) we passed through silverthorne and saw the ice castle where her dubstep video was taken. Sadly, it was mostly melted by the time we passed through :(

Better than the talentless, meaningless "music" that is rap/hip-hop that most of today's people seem to listen too.

Dubstep isn't bad, but I don't listen to it that much. It does sound great on my speakers though. :p

I wish I could pretend it was worth it, though. For a poor college student, the costs were just too much for the quality of snowboarding we had out there. While Steamboat was one of the lucky places (relatively speaking) that managed to get some snow in February, we hit the middle of a string of weeks with 50-60+ weather, which meant ice in the morning and extremely heavy snow/slush at the middle/end of the day. Anything steeper than blue runs were simply too miserable to even waste time on and blues themselves were frustrating because snow was mostly pushed around leaving heavy, quasi-moguls, which meant control was a must, which meant extremely slow moving down the mountain on a snowboard... I much prefer a speedier decent down the mountain and that was basically impossible without a high chance of failure when it came to stopping/control halfway down the mountain.

All that added up to around 2-3 hours in the actual mountain and another 4-5 drinking Coronas at the base, playing cards, and listening to live music, all while working on my tan.

lol.

BUT - Holy [filtered], I love Colorado so much compared to Indiana. Why didn't I go to CU Boulder? :<
