I hope so, WoW started the P2P trend (start as in proved it could be unbelievably successful) I'm hoping Guilds Wars can kill the P2P trend. GW2 is a massivenon sub MMO. That should be proving hey, you can do all the things you like without paying for it every month. I hope it shatters records and gets these other MMO companies to change their business model.

Noooooooooope, and for a couple of reasons.
1) While GW2 is free to play after you buy the box, the upcoming and new content will most undoubtedly not be and will require another purchasing. Just like with GW1 was going through it's expansions, GW2 will more than likely release content and expansions fast enough to nearly rival the 15 dollars per month gamers spend on subs. Now, a lot of people try to say that the expansions aren't required and you can play without them. Sure, this is the case, but if it's anything like GW1, you'll be effectively gimping yourself if you don't get the new expansion to get the new skills, abilities, content, etc.
2) I believe people might quit their p2p MMO for a few months before they figure out that they can do both, just like they do with all other b2p non-MMO games, and will subsequently resub.
3) What defines success is not necessarily the massive numbers that people see and expect as with WoW.
4) If b2p becomes more popular, the companies will find more and more ways (and have more and more excuses) to extort money from their players. With p2p you have that (albeit thin) veil of "hey I paid 15 bucks a month for this, you can't exclude vital content/etc from me!" whereas with b2p you simply do not. In fact, I worry b2p might become a b2p/f2p mixture of buying the game but having to deal with potentially game changing f2p aspects in regards to a cash shop.
I think I have more, but I need to go to work. :/

GW2 is a niche game. It isn't going to shatter records, its not going to cure cancer, and its not going to change the face of on-line gaming. If you don't want to sub to an mmo you don't have to, but i'd gladly cough up my 15 dollars a month for someone to maintain the game and create new content.
I just don't think your to much of a bright thinking VolcanP.
oh, and look. its this thread again.

I doubt updates will be much, and certainly not the price of the box again.
Updates will likely be similar to something like QoA where they add dungeons and features, blah blah blah. One time charge. Suckers in Tera are paying every month they don't receive this content. I'd rather pay for it when it comes out than pay to sit around in a stagnant game until they release it.

"just don't think your to much of a bright thinking VolcanP"
That was a cute statement.
Let me address this for you first. GW2 has a massive following. It has always been 2nd to WoW. Maybe people might not play GW's as much now because it's old and F2P(so they play when they want or not at all) but it is a major game that is internationally known. It's not niche and never was niche. For more information on that I suggest you do your own research.
Since GW already had a large audience and has gathered an even larger audience (the P2P crowd) it has gained even more notoriety these past few years. It has been the biggest topic for a very long time. It has also been one of the best selling PREordered games on Amazon for a very long time. It's not impossible to say that the game will have an extremely large release as it has been anticipated for again a very long time.
If you have every played an NCsoft or Anet game especually GW's you should know they are on top of their stuff. Guildwars the old one even gets updates to this very day. Guild Wars 2 is everything that people who played Guildwars 1 asked for and then some. It is not a slapped together game, it's a ground breaking game and if you followed up on the game (as I have for the past 3 years) you'd kow Anet is not playing around. That world you see is completely explorable. It is MASSIVE, and has a story to match it. There is nothing F2P feeling about GW2.
Will it break records? It already has.
You'd have to be a fool to think think this game is like Tera and will be overlooked the same week it comes out.

If by "niche game" you mean "an excellent MMO, with a quality that has been far too rare in recent years, making it more appealing than most (including the ones that require a monthly subscription).." then sure.. let's call it that.

GW2 isn't niche, but it won't kill off P2P either.
For one thing, there's your typical gamer. Beat everything as quick as possible, and then leave the game just as quickly, because they ran out of things to do.
I alsready see a bunch of beta testers buying and then leaving the game quickly, as they'll be rehashing everything they've already done.
P2P is just as viable an option as B2P. And has it's own benefits and drawbacks.
B2P...people don't have a system to handle it, that's one less person buying it.
F2P...people don't have a system to handle it, that's one less person paying a monthly subcription.
B2P goes about making their money on the initial sale. F2P tries to recoup/profit and then keep the profit going.
But there is something to be said about how MMOs are percieved. WoW's numbers have made it harder for some MMOs. "Will this game rival WoW?" "No, but it'll be successful." "Oh, well then, never mind, not worth it."

GW2 will not be the end of P2P for AAA-title MMORPGs. It can and probably will be the pioneer of B2P MMORPGs of this caliber. If The Elder Scrolls Online goes B2P as well, then I see that ending P2P because with GW2 and The Elder Scrolls Online as B2P, future MMO developers will need a very, VERY good reason as to why they're still making a mandatory monthly charge while other equal MMOs do not.
SWTOR is going to the F2P route as well as TERA eventually (as evidenced by Brian Knox's comments in the Reddit AMA).

I don't know if it will be the end of P2P MMO's. You'll probably spend a little less if we take WoW and GW as a model. You have expansions for new content in both games, one just doesn't have a subscription.
GW2 is on a much larger scale, a completely different beast from GW without nearly as much instancing. It remains to be seen how much new content players will get with expansions and between expansions. WoW had a much more interactive open world which really justified the subscription but now that GW2 offers the same thing, it may put some pressure on games that try P2P models to offer significantly more.
Arenanet does support its pvp balance better than most other MMO's, and this could be something that keeps the game going.
I think more than anything, it will mark the downfall of traditional questing. I'm not saying every new game will follow GW2's model, but definitely people are getting tired of the quest hub system and games that continue to use it will be viewed as out of date. From the oldies hankering for really old school exploration to people who just played too much WoW, I don't know if that will be around with too many future games.
