why games fail

caution: wall of text ahead.

Though the topic says "why games fail", this isn't about Tera failing. This is about any possibility of any game within the last couple of years failing, and why. Can a lack of content hurt a game? Can Devs not listening to their paying customers hurt a game? Can a game company just flat out "get it wrong"? The answer to all of this is yes....BUT, i give you another argument. I say, its not the companies making failing games, its the players who play said game that lead to its ultimate failure. allow me to elaborate.

Look at some of the oldest MMO's and look at how long they have been around. they have been around for what seems like forever. now, look at the games in the last few years that honestly, do not have NEARLY the longevity of games of old; Aion, Rift, SWTOR (could be argued, i dont play it so only going off of rumors). so what makes these new games diferent from old games? sure, there are similarities, you go from quest to quest , kill X amount of these, do this do that. but each new game has had new stuff that SHOULD of been something the gaming crowd found as inovative. flying, rifts, etc. none the less, the games are dieing much faster than older games that are still to this day around. this is why, so read on.

generation gap. a decade ago or more, we had my generation playing games. I'm 28. i consider those 25-35 around "my" generation. though complaints and whiners will always be in every game, it was a fraction of what i see today. todays games are getting the next generation of gamers. these new guys to the block are made up of people spoon fed everything. they get trophies for being last. they get the same grades as someone who works twice as hard because of "no kid left behind". their parents call them "princess" or "the most hansom" even though they aren't even close. so, basically a bunch of whiny, rude, disrepectful children now infest our games. their IRL personalites translate into the game, and vice versa. you can tell a lot about a person by how they act in game. basic human phsycology tells us this. its not my opinion, its a FACT made up by people that make a heck of a lot more money than the majority of us.

what does this mean? well, these whiners do nothing but bring up problems but are not willing to make solutions. they whine to devs about no PvP, yet THEY NEVER TURN ON OUTLAW and go in search of PvP. people complain about being PK'd, BUT THEY ARE IN A PvP SERVER. are you fracking (haha) serious? PvP fails, because you FAIL to PvP. stop sitting back and waiting for it to happen. get into a good guild, turn out law, and GO KILL PEOPLE. to those who don't want to be PK'd i say this. change servers to a PvE server. THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND YOU.

The PKee (as opposed to the PKer) always complains (and ill use an example from me playing last night) that "your trash, i was fighting a mob, try fighting me in a fair fight!" they PM to me. A) warfare isn't fair you idiot, B) i waited for the person to kill the mob then waited an additional moment before attacking. C) after the person killed the mob they picked up a healing mote and were back to full HP. now, as i said before, the world DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND YOU. i mean, what do these idiots think? PKers sit in a safe place waiting til someone gets into a battle? sure, there are some that do that, but not the majority. but these people assume the PKers are at full HP/MP at all times. now, when i PK i don't sit and heal and rest after each fight. i keep going until i die or "PvP has ended" becuas i ran out of people to kill. the PKer is at MUCH more of a disadvantage than these whiny kids that say "it wasn't fair!". why? becuase EVERYONE is trying to kill the outlaw, while you sit there fighting your simple mob. im sorry, but if you die, guess who those mobs attacks next? the PKer. the PKer is never at full, ready to go speed. so stop thinking you are at some disadvantage just so you can sleep at night and not feel bad that you died, you die because your horrible, not because a mob, thats hit for a whole 100Hp (O NO'S so strong!), is hitting you. this other guy, whispered me saying "you guys 2v1 me and are trash try coming back and doing that again 1 v 1". A) it was 2 v 2, just because the lancer that was with you wasn't grouped with you, doesn't mean it was 2 v 1, he was attacking us and so were you, thats pretty clearely 2 v 2. B) as i was typing back to him he ambushed me and got the first couple of hits. here's where it gets good. he gets his 1 v 1, except it doesnt go as he planned. i destroy him. instead of appoligizing for being an [filtered] he just blocks me so i can't say anything.

these.....are the kind of people playing games now. games fail because of the idiot, whining players. you would do a great service to the world, if you just throw away your computer, PS3, XBOX 360, and Nintendo, and never be seen again. let the men (and woman) play, you kids go play with your etch-a-sketches and lite-brights.

Except the problem with lite brights was once you used the sheet, it wasn't so much fun to punch holes into it anymore.

Feel better after having vented, OP?

This thread pisses me off. Myself. And 4 other friends, are of that generation your talking about .

We are yet to [filtered] about anything in this game, aside from occasionally getting bored... Which is justified. I've met other teenagers in game. They have no complaints. Heck, they have gone on these forums and gone WTF. Most of the entitled kids leave very quickly. With a little combustion. Right now, adults are the problem.
The adults who hate spending money are. The angry, grumpy, needing to vent adults are as well. They troll to feel better. The adults sitting in there desks bored. And floating around the forums.

But uh. Thanks tips, clearly us teenagers/young adults are all hell spawn and we should stop buying and playing games. Have fun with the gaming industry surving.
(our "entitled" asses, are a huge portion of the profit margin. Don't even deny it.)

(I'm not saying teenagers are totally free of fault, but the amount you chalk it up too is unfair.)

So basically the TL;DR of this thread:

"games die because people complain and also I am showcasing my talent as a player for killing questers. No seriously believe me it's harder than it looks"

I have to agree with Floydly and here's why: The teenage generation isn't very likely to have experience with games from the "good ol' days." They're judgement is based on more recent games. Some of the older gamers will see the past through rose tinted glasses. I prefer games like Unreal Tournament, Quake, and DOOM to Battlefield and Call of Duty for my shooters. The younger generation only really bothers to experience the latter two.

Every age group has entitlement issues. It's about how one approaches their games.

But this isn't REALLY the topic the OP started. This thread is a veiled attempt at bashing "PvPers" that really shouldn't have rolled on a PvP server.

It's not the teenagers - some of them kids are awesome.

It's the "respec" generation. The without consequence generation. The weak, meek and pathetic generation.

Add consequence like losing XP on death, or items on corpse and vitae penalties - and watch the warcrap generation squeal harder than a texan blonde in a hot summer night.

I'm going to only respond to the first three paragraphs and to Floydly.

I find myself nodding to the finger pointing at the younger generation, sorry Floyd, Nothing personal.

But things change because people change. New idea's and new Ideals change with generations, so to deny this fact or be offended is only getting huffy over the truth. What is considered acceptable and cool has changed, and it is the younger generation that is more willing to embrace and accept and be affected by this change.

This isn't me pointing the finger at the younger generation just because I have some sort of vendetta, it's a simple fact. The younger generation is more malleable. When i was 13-14 the internet was not a huge huge thing for me. Sure small forums existed etc, but when your hitting it up with 56k and a faulty phone line the time spent online as opposed to dealing with the real world issues is proportionately different. The real world has a very real tangible set of rules. For every action there is a reaction, and a reaction that can easily bring harm to you. And this influence is still present in "our generation".

But with the golden age of the internet, and younger generation the real world influence is not only lessened by the shelter that they are still accustomed to, but the internet is considered an entity entirely separate from the real world. and any action upon it, will result in a reaction that only provides entertainment, for however short a time that may be. this is not a universal rule but a major factor in how people grow and become who they are. the things we experience influence the people we become.

The internet has become cool, it is where the human races information is, the internet is where our jokes are, the internet is where we can find our family and friends, the internet is where we can play our games, the internet is where we can complete our homework, the internet is where we can find a job, order food, destroy a life, the internet has become all of these things, all of these things that the real world is, yet so many of us do not put the similarities together, and the internet is suddenly separate.

So yeah, this is why games die fast, because a new generation has come, a new generation raised in a world where consequence is replaced with opportunity. Where being a troll only raises more chances to do it more, where hurting another only means you can find someone else. where destroying a game only means you can find a new one. consequence is no longer real. And for those of us young or old on this internet has been influenced by this fact and are victims all the same.

I will admit, I skimmed your post, but having read the replies...

I'm older than you, thirty-one actually. And I can safely say that idiocy, entitlement, and lack of respect spans across EVERY age level. Disrespecting a group of people and branding them based on age is little different than racism or sexism.

Alright Grandpa. I'm 29 here, and if we both think for a minute more then our emotions, we might be able to puzzle this one out.

Ten years ago, the idea of having a million players in an MMO was tremendous. The successful MMO's had hundreds of thousands of people because it was a very niche market. Why? Because it had a focus that targeted a very small percentage of the population.

Its kind of like Dragon Quest. The mainstream thought Dragon Quest was boring and tedious as hell. To a small portion of the population however, it was gold. Other innovative people came along and noticed there could be improvements made in the tedium, while keeping the aspects of an RPG fun that most people liked.

This innovation produced some great games, Final Fantasy improved and made RPG's mainstream. Pretty cool. The history of MMO's is the same. We started with MUD's *Shudder* went to Ultima online, Everquest, and then the big break of MMOdom, World of Warcraft.

Suddenly, an MMO had been made that targetted a MUCH wider audience. Millions more in fact. WoW had around 11 million subscriptions at one point. Why? Because it got rid of a crap load of the tedium and archaic mechanics that turned those millions of people off before.

So no, this is not a whiny generation. This is a generation that expects a game catered more toward the mainstream. It doesn't want a "Use stairs" menu screen, it wants to touch its character to the stairs, and go down. (Dragon quest reference). Instead of dismissing their ideas by calling them idiot, immature, whiny babies, use that sage wisdom of 28 years on this planet to open your mind to the complaints, reasoning them through, and debating them on entertainment points.
