Ranking System

what about an open world ranking system?

Player ranking: If you kill a player higher ranked than you, depending on how much more you gain rank point (or something in the kind), and if he is less ranked than you, you get much less rank point (so at high rank it's way harder to increase your rank but that's fair) When you die to a player you loose point, also depending on his ranking. So if he is lower rank than you you loose much more points than if he is higher rank than you.

Guild ranking: Earn by GvG system, when you win a guild war against a higher ranked guild you get more point, worse ranked give less ranked. If you loose, just like for player your rank decrease depending on the rank on the ennemy guild rank. More ranked you loose less point, less ranked you loose more points.

You could see the rank of players and guild somewhere so everyone could know who are the top pvp guild and pvp player. That alone would be a good incitive to OWPvP and GvG! Also could lead to some "track". Like "Lets go gank the higher ranked player" or something like that, so the higher ranks would have to care more etc.

Well I believe it can lead to a lots of nice things, it's not really hard to implement,
Then if people want there could be some reward that you can buy only with X rank, but I think it's not really necessary, only the ranking system would give me a good reason to fight players of my own lvl.

What do you think about it all?

It sounds like Aion's system and people hated that. Losing points makes people not want to PvP. No one wants to PvP if they're going to lose stuff they need to progress while doing it. Never works.

people that actually liked to pvp, still pvp'd and liked it. carebears sat in town dueling and doing forts.

games like rift, swtor, and wow which have no repercussions are all terribly boring for open world pvp. people just run around like mindless idiots. and in swtor they tried rewarding open world pvp with no risk and look what happened, everyone just started trading kills.

open world pvp cant have a reward without a risk.

and i like op's idea. although, I don't know if enmasse has the power to actually do something like that to tera.

i don't think it is much a "big thing" to add a ranking system, probly not as big as totally change the pvp system like they already did, or any other major changes that they did... I think it is possible for them to add a ranking system :P

If you've played Aion, you'd understand a ranking system will only make carebears of the servers. It failed in Aion, it'll fail here, too. No point of a ranking system anyway.

The reason it didn’t work for aion is the points were used for buying gear, not just a rank system. The goal for most people was to stay as low a rank as they could after getting the gear so they could make huge gains without the losses of the higher ranks. People hated the risk of losing the points because at high ranks you took huge losses for any pvp death which came out to major setbacks in gear progression.

As long as the "points" in the ranking system cannot be used for ANYTHING else, I think it is a good system that would add alot to OW pvp (there should also not be any way to gain or lose points outside of PvP). If you make it so players 5 levels or lower than the attacker give no points it also acts as a deterrent from noob smashing because they aren’t worth anything. The difference in rank gain/loss should also be normalized to an extent, no single win/loss should be worth days+ of normal effort.

EDIT: I should also add that it failed in aion because the best way to get these "Rank" points was via PVE!

Yea, not a ranking system in order to get gear, just a ranking system for the fun of it, so everyone can see who are the top players and all, it also give people a way to be famous, and let everyone on the server know who are the best xD

The ranking could work a little like wow rating system for arena (wich is like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system)

And also the same system for guilds... and what is fun is being good become dangerous since everyone want to defeat you xD (either for the guild and player) wich always lead to more and more pvp xD

And you might take aion for an exemple of fail, (fail because of items as it been said) but there are a LOT of game with ranking to see who are the best player. Even aika, a free to play, have it: http://aika.gpotato.com/?m=ranking_system so it is certainly possible to add such a simple thing in a game like Tera, and would just be cool xD There is nothing to loose from it xD

They need a system like DAOC. You get points from killing a player, the higher the players rank you kill the more points. You go up in Rank and there are 10 levels per rank, each level you get a point to spend on some PvP skills.

Here are examples of DAOC pvp abilities/passives.
http://www.ping.de/~sven/daoc/configurator.html

Then again DAOC was a game centered around PvP and there was no room for PvErs to complain about the advantages PvPers got from this.
