Elin Censorship - Didn't help public perception, hurt it

I've seen a couple articles online about the recent TERA CBT, and the response has been super positive, but it seems like there is always a last little dig at the Elin, how they are "creepy" and dressed like "strippers". There are 2 up on Massively right now.

I happen to think it's ridiculous, having been an Anime fan for many years, and having an understanding & appreciation for eastern culture/art.

In the west there is a knee jerk reaction to anything that resembles sexualized children in mass media, even though parents nowadays let their little kids wear makeup and dress like prostitutes in real life. Nevertheless the masses foam at the mouth at this topic, and all rational discourse becomes useless. Its a bit like the "burn the witch" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

What I'm wondering though, is if the censorship was worth it? Seems like the censorship brought the issue into the public perception of this game. Now when someone hears "Tera" they associate it with the cool action style gameplay, oh, and those creepy children they had to censor. It's the streisand effect, essentially.

In retrospect, they should have either left it alone and not drawn attention, or gone the other way and removed the race entirely.

I hope they have a plan or something... haven't heard anything on this from EME in a long time.

It is more or less what I predicted would happen. It would be a good thing if we could compile a collection of these articles so that EME can see that they were wrong.

Then again, they don't care if they are wrong, they just want to forget this ever happened.

The Elin in MMO media is a bit like guns in traditional media.

They're looking for any reason to put it down and make a story out about how terrible it is so that less people will have them.

There is a type of psychology to it, let's use drinking alcohol for example, a 16 year old wants to get his buzz going so he goes out of his way to get some, now if it were legal for you to drink at 16 he most likely would have something else on his mind.

For a change it would be nice if the Elin supporters could get on the forums while the anti-Elin's rage and fret about the change, they are laughing and shrugging, because they didn't lose anything.

Let's take PvP out of TERA and make it strikly dueling, then say "it's final!" all over the place, bet that wouldn't go so well.

Tiss true, before Elin hit the front page i didn't even know the game had Elin to begin with... I learned about them after an article about censor ship appeared. I am open minded so i was meh nothing big... however may people in my gaming community (over 500), only know TERA for 2 things. A) breeding pedo grounds and B) conservative a.holes who broke there own design to put a [censored] sticker on everything.

Anyone who complains about this is completely and utterly ridiculous. I hope you understand this, OP. You're complaining that a tiny bit of upper thigh is being covered on a child like race. What in the hell is wrong with you?

This isn't an issue. At all. Maybe it's an issue with a VERY SMALL vocal minority on these forums who have some deep rooted issues and need some serious therapy before these issues progress to full blown pedophilia, but it has not altered "public perception" otherwise and your statement is absolutely ludicrous. CHRIST.

Whatev, no one is trying to make everyone happy here. In fact, wouldn't it just be rude and insulting for me to try and change your perfectally valid opinions? You're welcome to them. You're wrong, but I respect your right to be wrong. Personally I consider anyone who thinks the Elins cater to a certiant deviant audience to be deviant theirself. No disrespect to deviantart, those guys are just being hip.

Agreed, OP. I have Massively on my Google Feed and every single article just HAS to snipe at Elin somewhere in it. It's one of the most annoying and pathetic things I've ever seen.

I just read the latest post on CBT1 and how great it was, but NOPE! Gotta jab at Elin! Because it's totally needed, yessir!

The stupidest thing about this whole issue is just like I said WAY back last year when this [filtered] was announced, all this was going to do is make people notice it more.

And of course, like idiots, they went ahead and did it anyway, and now it's a [filtered] self fulfilling prophecy. I didn't see anyone complaining about Elin once before this whole fiasco, now it's in every goddamn article about the game.

It's like these people have to reassert how "normal" they are, cause "OH, MAN BRO, THAT GAME WOULD BE AWESOME IF IT DIDN'T HAVE THAT PEDO [filtered] AM I RIGHT BRO? RIGHT? WHO'S WITH ME!"

I never understood either sides in this argument. I have been a pretty hardcore anime fan for over 10 years, although I have zero interest in playing a race like Ellin, but I also have nothing against them being in the game. I have been annoyed by US content ratings many times, it always seems like this country is more scared of seeing women's breasts than letting kids murder hundreds of innocent people in most vicious ways in games like GTA and Prototype.

With Tera it's not much different though more minor, why do they care what kind of underwear Ellin have? I also don't understand all the complaining about this censorship is about though, you are not playing this game to look at your characters underwear, don't make this sound like it ruined the game.

I don't think it ruined the game, nor do I even think it ruined the race. It did, however, ruin a fair bit of armor because instead of making some really classy, pretty outfits, they did a stupid rush job as quickly as possible with half the outfits not even making any sense anymore--see bare skin around collar, but slapped in place texture over belly. Wait, where'd that come from?! Etc. -_-
