To be honest the Elin were my last choice in picking a race. Only tied with High Elf males, because lets be honest all High Elves are female just ones with boobs and ones without. (easy High Elf fans its a joke) But during beta I decided to try all races and classes, the elin I can say were the most fun. Their skill animations alone are great. Now I would say they are my second favorite race, behind you guessed it High Elves.
As for the ONLY reason I wouldn't go that far. I think the games has a ton more to offer then one race. Then again they certainly are the most "discussed" race in Tera.
Well for me Roda it goes something like this... "Come for the Elin, stay for everything else". In essence for ME (bolded for emphasis not shouting) the Elin are a hook and TERA's primary attraction however if everything else about the game sucked [filtered] it'd ruin my gaming experience and the main reason why I picked this game in the first place.
Yes, but I would make the character designers the happiest people in the world.
Eh.. If I made a marble statue, and people were only praising it from one angle, I would start to obsess over how I can make the other sides just as good. (But that's just my OCDness talking)
I want an MMO (every other one qualifies) + elin... I am not only going to be "just foolin' around as an Elin" I want to enjoy a game that has such a wonderful character
Blade & Soul was really the only direct competition for this game to me, but the Lyn do not have any real customization options and their ears are a little too large for my taste
I actually did a very intense comparison of these two games. To me it was a very hard decision.
I actually expect an actual character creation system from them. I don't think they're even done with their betas.
hmm, I see so you are completely lost on how a particular race could be the major deciding factor for a person...
To me I have always wanted to be a cute little female character with animal ears, to me this is like a dream come true. Though, as amazing as it is, I cannot simply go into the game files, extract the elin, and play with them in some modeling software. I have to be able to engage with them in activities, dress them up in pretty clothes, watch them dance, watch them hit a monster over the head with a giant axe, etc.
The main point of this is that to me, I am creating a character in the game, and the game itself is just a way for me to interact with that character, and spend tiem with that character. To me, games are generally more character focused. I get my enjoyment from watching my character accomplish goals... to me it is more like getting happiness from my character's happiness... so if they removed the little "yay" animations from the game ... it would more drastically decrease the enjoyment I get from the game itself.
See, that's my complete opposite. I have no emotional attachments to my character. I don't form a relationship with her. She is the truest sense of an avatar for me. She represents me in the game world. My emotions are her's, not the other way around.
I have no problem with your posts, though they did seem a little aggressive. I can understand why you would be mad about "shallow gimmicks." Though, your reason for agitation is now known and can be understood, which puts us all in a much better situation.
The majority of internet arguments are because neither side is willing to understand the viewpoint of the other. I remember a time in these forums when there was actual constructive criticism, and people didn't act like babies when they received it.
I hope you were able to understand a little of how I approach tera, and hope that it does not upset you too much. I do not know if this view is what is shared among my fellow "only playing for the Elin" crowd members, but I hope this will atleast shed some light onto how one of them approaches the game.
It did help. :)
(Although I won't be happy about it! /pout)
P.S.
Also, thanks for the questions. These really made me think about the differences in the community members and how I am approaching the game as opposed to other people. It was actually a fairly enlightening experience.
BHS had no idea what kind of [filtered]storm they were brewing when they said they would make a "global game."
P.S.S.
It toolk me over 30 minutes to write this post because I was stopping to think/ editing/ and all sorts of things. Huge wall of text :x
YOU'RE TELLIN' ME! I had a whole rant typed out, about how games should be looked at as one cohesive work of art, and not picked through like trail mix, for my first post, but decided to delete it all because I was approaching full-on [filtered]-mode. >.<

This makes your "cake" analogy make a whole lot more sense. :P
The Elins are a neat burst of flavor and flair, while the gameplay is the iconic part of the experience.
Not saying anything bad about you. You play for whatever reasons you want.
But if I was the content designer for TERA, this thread would break my heart.
Eh.. If I made a marble statue, and people were only praising it from one angle, I would start to obsess over how I can make the other sides just as good. (But that's just my OCDness talking)
Yes, but a team of people work on games this large. Character designers and content designers are usually different people in projects this large.
also I have those ears ordered already, and have a few pieces of female clothing(like the above)... i don't wear it(way too small) I just buy it because I like the designs/ look of the clothing
Actally its more of a fantasy for me ^^;

Yeah, I derive most of my enjoyment from my fantasy of my character's enjoyment.
Well, I guess we can agree to disagree?

Yes, true true... but I am sure there is a reason why forums like these degrade over time... ofcourse social interactions/structures is not a subject I know much about

Glad you did ^^; not that the idea as bad, but that [filtered] in [filtered]-mode scares me xD
I found Tera because a friend mentioned it, and we were both ex-dragon nest players.
We loved dragon nest, but we despise nexon with every fiber of our being. So I was really hoping to capture some of the combat feel of that game here. So I would be playing with or with out Elin.
However, I have always really enjoyed playing smaller characters wielding massive weapons. Which I can do with the Popori and Elin. It makes me very happy that its a possiblity.
Now, that I've seen them, if the Elin were to disappear, or be changed, I would not play this game for the same reason I quit dragon nest. I wont support a company I dislike even if their game is good.
Already tried Blade and Soul (and yes, Lynn is awesome). The thing about Blade and Soul however is that it has *heavy* asian mythology and art-styles throughout the game down to the core of the combat. It's doubtable that that game would even function with the westernization zealousness that's been brought down on Tera here. It's a good game to play if your not offended/afraid of different cultures or art-styles in video-games.
By all means, there is nothing wrong with playing as Elin as a reason for playing Tera. Just as those interested in Tera because of the Castanics.
That's not entirely true. There's so many asianphiles in the U.S that it's almost sickening. And B&S will attract a larger crowd than TERA due to that art style. The anime crowd is a large and fierce one. Not to mention NCSoft (as far as I know) doesn't region lock unless they have the game available in that particular region already.

Could you possibly define what you mean by asianphile? It is a slang term, and I am seeing it for the first time.
I searched for the term, but the definitions were unclear. Usage of the word varies to mean many different things...
So, I am a bit curious as to what you meant when you used that particular word in your post.
