I'm not a big RP'er and plan to probably do a little bit but the thing that makes me iffy is would the "area" chat (/a) be considered mainly an OOC chat or would people be expected to be IC the whole time they talk in /a?

Area = OOC. That is... unless the races of Arborea have a hive mind.
Yeah thats what I was feeling personally, or I was thinking everyone had to have some kind of massive shout magic... or we have radios? lol
Thanks for the reply on this, def gonna go to an RP server (my guild is most non-RPers but we are going for the nice communities on RP and some of us do RP now and again for random fun... but if it was full on IC in area I could see some things being hard to do

thanks to beta i've actually gotten into just turning area off completely like lfg. but hopefully I don't have a need to when Celestial hills is available lol
I don't see it as being an IC thing though, unless the circumstances has you making a big enough IC ruckus that it would be reason to make an IC post in area *shrugs*
depends I guess, but I'd think usually ooc

I was playing with the settings and turned off area. When I would see /say chat, I couldn't find anyone around. What is the distance(area) for /say?
Maybe if there was a circumstance where someone let out a loud shrill or roar, one could justify using area chat as part of the RP for a line or two, but it would only be justified for limited situations.

We have a /yell channel, don't we? That's preferable, though area sort of works if there is no /yell channel, however it must be kept in mind some RPers turn off area chat ASAP to avoid breaking immersion or the temptation to converse in area chat.

Hmm, since the Elins have their "nature ears," wouldn't it be acceptable for them to use that as a medium of IC communication? .__.

I think they're really just hearing the animals and trees "talk."
*Littlebit walks into a wooded area corrupted by the Argon war machine*
"The trees here are crying..."

I always wondered about this too when it comes to guild chat. People seem to socialize in-character in guild chat, and it always makes me wonder how they would do it without some psychic connection. :P
Then again, I've seen lots of guilds come up with cool excuses to enable RP in guild chat. Maybe they have magical artifacts that allows communication of thoughts!
