Healing in this game is very interactive, and it def. has more of an action feel to it. Also keep in mind they back-loaded a lot of useful skills like our Shield and Healing Immersion.
Of the things you could control, positioning and aggro. management is pretty key. Your lock-on heal could potentially fill up 75% of a players health, and he could lose all of that in the very next hit from a BAM. Do that a few times in a row without dpsing in between and the BAM is charging straight at you.
If I had to reference other MMO's, I would say the play style that's working for me as a priest right now is a cross between a Warden in Rift and a Bear Shaman in AoC. Position your hots (also keep blessing of Balder up, every little bit helps) before the big damages comes; and when needed, run in, burst heal and GTFO.
