foufoufun's Post History

There isn't much you can do about anything here. All of these problems are on their end, and they seem to be more complicated than we could think.

And the internet doesn't really works with distances. Of course it has some impact but you can't precisely count wire length and make any sense of it. The internet isn't a post office or else Australia would be more than cut off from the world. Also, I don't think EME has [filtered] machines for servers. If the problem was that simple, the game would have cost 5 more $ or have less servers.

It's more likely to be software problems that actually requires man power to fix.

if you are using windows 7 ... 4 gb of ram is not nearly enough. windows uses up around 2gb by itself, and tera gets up to 3 or so gb occasionally... your comp would start having stupid low fps as soon as u get up to around 1.2gb... which is pretty much the baseline of tera.

I don't know what you do with your computer but right now, if I shut all my useless applications in the background (firefox, itunes, msn...), I'm down to around 1.6 gb of used RAM. But I leave them on, because anyway Tera doesn't take more than 1.3-1.4gb, when it goes up to 1.8gb, that's the memory leaks that some people are talking about. Even when the RAM is fully used (getting closed to 4gb), as long as it doesn't have to use backup memory on the hard drive, everything on the computer should run fine. More RAM won't make your computer faster, it's just memory space. Having more seats in your car doesn't make faster either. They sell [filtered] laptops at best buy running on windows 7 with 2-3 gb of RAM, if win7 would take as much as 2gb all the time, I don't think those customers would be very pleased.
I have canceled my sub, so I can't go back to the game to see progress but here is my specs

MB: Asus P5KPL-CM
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66 Ghz (Overclocked to 3Ghz)
GPU: EVGA Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT
RAM: 4Gb DDR2
Res: 1920x1080

I used to run the game on a 1440x900 screen, could get up to 50 fps with no one arround, desabling the UI capped it to 60, with people around (15-20), the fps would be 30 and 40 (I can't remember exactly), all of this on max settings.

In 1920x1080 on max settings with no one around, I could go as high as 30 fps and 40-45 fps with the UI turned off. With people around (15-20), it would drop to 20-25 fps and ~35 fps with the UI off.

In combat (mostly vs npc), the fps would rarely go over 25 fps, even on lowest graphic settings. In dungeon I could get about 45 fps (with something around preset 5) when derping around and 20-25 fps on boss fights, the fps randomly went up to 30-40 for a minute or two during fights.

Just for giggle, on lowest settings in Velika looking at the ground or sky, I had about 80-100 fps with the UI on and it would sky rocket over 200 with the UI off (=.

All in all, it's an average of 20-30% fps increase with the UI off. Same for the gpu usage, 75-80% usage with the UI on, 100% with the UI off in most situation (depend on the amount of players around). Nexus are just hopeless and Battlegrounds performance is strongly affected by the amount of player (gotta turn down the player view distance). If too many players are around and doing stuff (hitting on each other or mobs as in Nexus), hiding the UI doesn't do anything. For example, in nexus, my cpu usage won't ever go higher than 30% (considering that only 2 cores can be used out of 4) and the gpu usage won't ever go higher than 15%. The fps difference with UI on/off is barely noticeable (3->4 fps and 10->12 was the best I got when we were no more than 70-80 players there)

I noticed a number of people having an especially bad case of this problem are using an "AMD 8 core" processor.

lol Bulldozer?

That cpu is widely regarded in tech community as a major flop of an architecture. Despite the number of cores and the high clock speed, it doesn't perform quite as well as Intel's latest offering. It theoretically should have more than enough processing power, but the architecture is fundamentally different enough from other cpus on the market that I'm guessing the Tera client is horribly unoptimized for running on Bulldozer cpus.

nah, using intel core 2 quad Q9400 2.66ghz (OCed to 3ghz) and the problem is as bad as everyone else. overclocking fixed it a bit, got rid of the game freeze when turning in quests or moving from a district to another in Velika. But I gain a good 20-30% increase in fps when hiding the UI in most cases, the GPU usage will drop to around 80% when there are more than 5-6 ppl around (less than 15% in nexus, cpu usage drops to 25-30% in nexus for some reason compared to being capped to 50% when alone).
these kind of things, like sport games, is something I just can't understand. Unless you are crippled, why would you want to do something in a video game that you can do in real life? If you are role playing, well you have a good reason, but why would you derp around a campfire watching a guitar animation in a video game? I wanna fight monster, carry a big [filtered] sword, shoot at people! Not do laundry and grow flowers....

"if you're designing your game so players are more focused on the UI than on the action you are doing it wrong."

It's a good quote, and i agree.

And it's not remotely relevant to the conversation because nobody suggested you should be looking at a damage meter in the middle of a fight, you'll also see in the video that mine isn't even displayed in combat.

so far, players are more focused on gear than the actual fight, so something must be wrong here as well

I remember the early attempts at Iron Council (I thinks that's what it was called) where we found our best strategy to work by throttling damage according to positioning, phase and buffs available. Go balls out in some windows stop for a moment etc.

Of course we had our AoE ladders and Burst Damage ladders - who happened to be officers, btw. It took us a week or two longer to get that thing down because they couldn't help but let loose early in the fight or in AoE opportunities, which meant on every wipe as everyone else was tearing out their hair with frustration they'd just caw in vent about how absurdly high their scores went while not taking into account the overall strategy.

Meters artificialise an encounter. Instead of focusing at that mean big monster and getting around it your focusing yourself on a computer UI.

No

No

No

If you need meters there are game's out there catering to you. Don't push it on us here, where it's more valuable to look at the action and immersion than to look at multicolored lines to pet our peens.

I understand your point here, I too have a lot of fun wiping over and over again until we finally get it right. For me, when a boss is dead, it's game over. But here, we're talking about a pug situation, people that need solid numbers to base their judgement. We don't know each others, so we have to base ourselves on something to figure out who should and shouldn't be here. Apparently, the gear level isn't enough to prove that a dps can pull it's weight. You can't lie with a dps meter, I'd be happy to know that I should fine flaws in that T13 +11 berzerker that is pulling 200k dps instead of the 350k he should be able to do and help him fix them, instead of complaining about that poor slayer in T12 +6 going out of his way to do 250k dps. (numbers are random here btw)

And like Teoh said, don't you want to compared yourself to others? Isn't it the whole point of competition. Don't tell me that after 1-2 months, downing the bosses is still your goal. After you got through them once, it's nothing but a grind fest to defeat that next boss.

Well can the teleport jaunt that happens when charging or a skill that can be cast moving has this then I agree UI is messing this part up as a priest and sometimes my target heal aren't really locking onto the character till i stop and forcefully put the cursor on top of the character.

plus, i don't see them lazy , just busy on this patch and checking on bug's that occur's such as that HP thing in BT which wasn't hard. This seems it will require sometime and take time away from fixing small annoying bugs that affect a lot of people.

I don't focus on FPS as for everyone seems different. Sorry, I really don't have a full array of knowledge on FPS and how it affects the game.

go to best buy, find the cheapest computer, install Tera, try to play (but having a low fps on a 100$ machine would normal)
DPS meter leading to cookie cutter specs? the first thing everyone does when getting inside a dungeon is looking up your crystals and telling you which ones you should have. A DPS meter won't change much. It would just be a convenient way to show to other players blinded by those cookie cutter specs how you can pull your weight. Even if you don't have that +9 on your gear.

Everyone seem to think that +9 is needed to do anything, so far, the end game content is pretty much designed for +6. I would like to be able to enjoy the game without having to farm like a chinese. A DPS meter seems like the best way fix that. Unless you have a better idea.

Saying that a DPS meter would make it worse makes it look like you have something to hide...
well then, if a dps meter isn't good. should the item level requirement be higher? I'm having a hard time to just even get a group started. I guess it's more like a social problem here, no one wants a dps meter and say its all about skills but will kick whoever isnt glowing blue. If the game let you inside, it means you are ready.

If no dps meter, why not a specific dmg value that ppl can see while inspecting.
