Lancers tank by blocking hits.
Warriors tank by not getting hit.
A Lancer at endgame will have high HP and endurance and a shield capable of blocking up to a certain amount. If an enemy hits you for more than that amount the overflow will go onto the Lancer as damage, reduced by endurance. If the Lancer fails to block he takes the full hit, as would be expected.
Warriors on the other hand will have slightly lower HP but have about the same effective endurance as a lancer due to skills that adjust their stats such as Defensive Stance but no ability to block. Also, many of the Warriors abilities reduce incoming damage while being used. This means that a Warrior will have to constantly move to keep from taking large hits and using their doge ability to pass through power hits or AOEs without taking damage. When the warrior does take damage, it will be about the same that the Lancer would take from an unblocked attack.
This boils down to Lancers being better in some situations (groups of enemies, fast attackers) and Warriors being better in other situations (powerful enemies that would overpower a shield).
The downside of this for Warrior is that it is much easier for a Lancer to avoid taking damage in most cases and easier for DPS and Healers to do their thing. This is the main reason Warriors have a bad name in other versions of Tera; bad players are more visible when playing Warrior than Lancer.
A bad player will be better with Lancer. Decent players will do well with either. The best players will excel with Warrior.
